The wayside crosses around Malzieu

A walk dotted with wayside crosses, which once served to guide travellers but also served as a reminder to the local population of their duty of devotion to God. By the way, how many did you count?

Description of the walk

Park at the entrance to the village, on the Route de Saint-Chély-d'Apcher, in the shaded, free car park by the river.

(S/E) With your back to the village, cross the bridge over the Truyère and then take the Sentier des Espagnols on the right (GR®4), which is a slightly steep climb.

(1) Cross the D4 with care and take the path furthest to the right, which climbs through the woods parallel to the road.

(2) At the Croix Rosière crossroads, hidden in the undergrowth on the right, continue straight on then follow the signposts indicating the church of Saint-Pierre-le-Vieux on the right.

(3) Once you reach the medieval site, continue to the left on theGR®4. Cross the small stream then head up to the hamlet of Chassagnes, turning left before Le Mazel.

(4) In the village’s main square, take the tarmac path in front of you which runs alongside a row of chalets on your right before joining the D4. Cross with care and continue along a small path opposite.

(5) At La Pierre Plantée (the “pinjo chabre” menhir), continue straight on along a wide path, ignoring the successive paths to the left and right, until you reach the village of Vareilles. At the entrance to the village, keep left, below the church.

(6) At the two crosses, take the small road on the left. A few dozen metres after the stream, follow the path on the left at an old granite cross. Cross the small road carefully again and continue straight on to the next crossroads, which you passed earlier in the hike. Head straight on to reach the Croix de Rosière.

(2) Leave the path you took on the way there and turn right towards Ortizet (horse riding signs). At the end of the path, turn left, cross the D989 with care and head for the orientation table.

(7) Take the path initially blocked by an ONF barrier. The track climbs through the Ganigal woods and ends in a single track, at the end of which you continue left onto a stony, downhill track. Near the A-road, turn right onto the track running parallel to the road until the bend, then take a wider path on the right which leads to the Fontaine Notre-Dame.

(8) Cross the road carefully, walk past the holiday village on your left and continue towards La Chazette. At the bend, turn left onto a small path by the hornbeam hedge which leads to the municipal campsite.

(9) Go round the sports hall and head back towards the village, keeping the sports fields on your right.

(10) Immediately after the footbridge over the Truyère, take the path on the left between the river and the irrigation channel. Go behind the village hall, then follow Chemin de la Sablière, which passes through a series of gardens before returning to the road to Saint-Chély-d’Apcher.

Turn left twice to reach the car park (S/E).

A lovely walk, sometimes uneven, with superb views over the Truyère gorges. I enjoyed the sundial on the bell tower of Vareilles church, with a panel inviting visitors to calculate the exact time.

A lovely walk, very well documented. An interesting route that’s well worth a short detour to the Porte des Fées (20 minutes there and back) in Saint-Pierre le Vieux, 2 km after the start.
