Moreau Falls

This hike will take you into the heart of Guadeloupe's tropical rainforest. The trail leads to the Moreau Falls, where you can swim.

Access is prohibited by municipal decree until further notice due to an extremely high risk of rockfalls and mudslides. See here.

Description of the walk

Take the Douville Forest Road and the Moreau Forest Road. Park at the end of the latter in the car park provided for this purpose.

(S/E) The hike begins on a flat and relatively clear path. However, the vegetation quickly becomes denser. The path is sometimes muddy and often strewn with roots, which can cause you to fall into the mud.

The path crosses the Moreau River several times. There is no other option but to put your feet in the water and be careful not to slip on the smooth stones.

Shortly before reaching the falls, the trail climbs much more steeply. Stairs and ropes have been installed to facilitate access to the falls just beyond.

(1) On the way back, take the same path. There is no other way anyway (S/E).

Waypoints

  1. S/E : km 0 - alt. 231 m - Parking
  2. 1 : km 3.25 - alt. 439 m - Chutes Moreau
  3. S/E : km 6.5 - alt. 231 m - Parking

Notes

Even though access to the falls is easy, the tropical rainforest is inherently hostile. Wear good shoes and bring some provisions and water with you.

Wear long-sleeved clothing. We did not see any mosquitoes during our visit, but the environment is very conducive to them. They probably come out at dusk.

Bring a swimsuit with you so you can swim at the foot of the waterfall or in the river.

Above all, avoid rainy days. Turn back immediately if it starts to rain. The fords are no longer passable in the event of sudden and frequent flooding. You could then find yourself stranded.

TRAIL CLOSED since 2019 with fines threatened according to documents posted everywhere... under the shelters and signs in the car park at the start of the trail, i.e. after overcoming many obstacles and taking many risks with the car. Conclusion: either this is still the case and therefore the town of Goyave and the ONF indicate this at the START of the trail, or it is obsolete and they will remove these documents.

Other information: it should be noted that access is only possible by 4x4, or SUV at a pinch, and that this hike is particularly difficult: there is little elevation gain but a lot of mud, river crossings, and progress through the roots is difficult.

A route without any great difficulty, except for slippery ground covered with roots, stones and mud, and the river to cross.

Very reliable. The Moreau forest road is a bit bumpy but passable.
A very beautiful drive, and the waterfalls are well worth the detour.

Notes from 10 April 2018: a tree has fallen across the forest road leading to the car park. You will need to leave your car there, which adds about 3 km to the walk to the start of the hike. We assume that the tree will be removed quickly, but until confirmation of this is received, please take this into account when calculating your time.

The Moreau Falls are a series of four waterfalls, the highest of which is magnificent. It is a beautiful hike that offers a wonderful glimpse of the vegetation. Allow time to enjoy the waterfalls (and find No. 4, which is not on the direct route).

The route on the map leads to the highest waterfall, called waterfall No. 1.

Waterfalls No. 2 and No. 3 are located on the Mangle ravine, which you must take about 250 m before waterfall No. 1, just before tackling the last real climb. Go up the Mangle ravine for 50 m. Waterfall No. 2 is on the left (it is actually the continuation of No. 1). Waterfall No. 3 is visible on the right on a tributary ravine. I will post photos of the approximate location of the waterfalls.

Waterfall No. 4 is located on the tributary ravine that joins the Mangle ravine at point 367 on the IGN map. You have to climb 250 m to find the waterfall. There is a faint trail on the right bank, which is quicker than climbing up the river, which is possible but long.
Coordinates of waterfall No. 4: N 16° 6' 30 W 61° 39' 10 or in decimal 16.1085 -61.6527
I will also post a photo.

A very beautiful hike that I hadn't done in a long time.

There is a small ravine that you cross via a footbridge shortly after setting off. This ravine is very handy for rinsing your shoes on the way back!

Very challenging hike, 5 hours to complete the route, very rainy weather, slippery and muddy, bring water and cereal bars for the journey, hiking boots are essential and must be waterproof, as you will have to cross through water, for experienced hikers, beautiful scenery to see!

This hike is worth doing for the beauty of the waterfall, but it is challenging due to the mud, slippery roots and six or seven gullies that must be crossed with caution. The time indicated on the sign at the start is not realistic for average hikers. Be sure to bring enough water for four to five hours and food. Good hiking boots are essential in my opinion. As someone who is used to medium-length hikes, I found this one rather long.

A fairly challenging hike due to its length, but also because of the mud along the entire route. We had to wade through the water at the lookouts because the water level was quite high. It took us 4 hours to complete the round trip.

Hello,

the GPS track is indeed approximate.

In any case, just follow the path. It is clearly visible, so it's difficult to get lost.

Well done to the Visorando website!

Regarding the hike to Moreau Falls, the GPS route shown is incorrect and was definitely not recorded in the field. The IGN map places Moreau Falls on Racoon Ravine, when in fact they are located on Mangle Ravine.
On our website zoom-guadeloupe.fr, we describe this hike and show the location of the four main waterfalls on the geoportal map.
See the link:
