Waterfalls of the Petite Lézarde River

In the heart of the rainforest, in Petit-Bourg, a river trek featuring waterfalls, gorges and cascading steps. It is a demanding trail, as it involves a lot of walking in the river, but in an exceptional setting.

Description of the walk

Park at the end of Allée Merwart; please note that this Merwart track is often muddy.

(S/E) Take the path that follows it; you will immediately come to a crossroads of paths.

(1) Take the well-marked path on the left, head downhill and reach the Petite Rivière Lézarde. Follow it to the right; occasionally, forest paths allow you to cut across a bend in the river. Walk between gorges, rock outcrops and a small waterfall before reaching the junction of a large, fairly wide 10-metre waterfall. Head left there, then return to this junction.

(2) Take the path running alongside the river to the left. Descend 50 m to rejoin the path through the forest, then climb up to the left. You will soon reach another junction. Descend to the left to reach a very pretty waterfall and a beautiful pool. Stop here; for details, see the note in the ‘Places to see’ section. Return to the previous junction.

(3) Turn left again and, after a final climb, join the Trace Merwart at the top.

(4) Turn right onto it and follow it back to the original junction.

(1) Continue straight ahead, in the opposite direction to the outward journey, for a few metres, to reach the Allée Merwart car park (S/E).

Notes

Please note: the path is often muddy.
Quite a long walk through the river.
Slippery rocks.
(2) Waterfall: opportunity to stop for lunch.

Worth a visit

Look out for the lush flora. Fly wings. Heliconia in bloom in April and May. Magnificent bright red mushrooms.
(3) Waterfall and pool: to the left, you’ll see a two-tiered waterfall and athird tier at the very bottom. Facing the waterfall and its pool, turn around and walk 20 metres back down the river to catch a glimpse of the upper tier. Walk down to appreciate the beauty of the spot; the rocks aren’t too slippery.
