Les Capélans and la Grande Pallières

A long loop to climb to the summit of Capélans, which offers a fine view of the surrounding area, then to discover the dolmens on the Grande Pallières ridge and the Panissière dolmen further down. Return via the quiet districts of Anduze.

Description of the walk

In Anduze, park in the car park near the submersible bridge on Rue Pélico. Yellow markings are present throughout the route, but at intersections, follow the description and/or map to know which of the yellow-marked paths to take. Please note! Many hikers did not appreciate the overly long sections on tarmac (see reviews).

(S/E) Go up Rue Pélico on the right to reach the main street of Anduze (Plan de Brie) and turn left, passing in front of the tourist office and the town hall. On this square, note the "Anduze-mairie" sign and turn left, following the direction "Les Capélans".

As the main street turns left, at the Fontaine Pradier signpost and the fountain of the same name, continue on the right, passing to the right of the fountain, onto the street that climbs slightly (Route de Saint-Félix), still heading towards Les Capélans. Shortly afterwards, you will see the red and white markings forGR®® 7 and 67, which you should follow until further notice.

Follow the road, walking on the right-hand side and taking care as there is no pavement or hard shoulder. Finally, you will see Chemin des Pierres Onches on your right. Follow this road. After about 1 km, you will reach the "La Cabanisse" signpost.

(1) Leave theGR®® markings and continue to the right towards Les Capélans. After about 300 metres, take a path on the right. It descends and runs alongside a riding centre. Cross the Ruisseau de Graviès stream via a footbridge and you will arrive at the "Montaigu" signpost.

(2) Turn right to continue alongside the equestrian centre, this time on your right. This small road leads back towards the neighbourhoods of Anduze.

(3) At the junction with another small road, at the "Chemin de l'Olivier" signpost, take the path that climbs to the left, still heading towards Les Capélans. You will come to a road; follow it to the right. Pass in front of a beautiful old house. As the road makes a hairpin bend to the right, follow a path to the left, which passes in front of a house. Further up, the path veers to the left and joins a small road.

(4) At the entrance to a hamlet, note the signpost marked "l'Olivier" and continue towards Les Capélans, leaving the road and taking a path on the left.

(5) At the "Sous les Capélans" signpost, climb left towards Les Capélans via a narrow path. At a fork, follow the signpost (post) that turns left (the path on the right is the return route). Follow a magnificent path along the edge of the cliff to reach the summit ("Les Capélans" signpost).

(6) Descend by following the signs for "Sous les Capélans" on the right to return to the intersection at the signpost. Continue downhill to the left along the same path as on the way up to return to the path at the bottom, at the "Sous les Capélans" signpost.

(5) Continue left, following the signs for L'Aiguille and the dolmens. Follow the marked trail and ignore the paths branching off to the left.

(7) Further on, at the "l'Aiguille" signpost, follow the path to the right towards "Panissière" and the dolmens. At the fork just after, continue to the left.

(8) At the "Panissière" signpost, continue to the right towards Col de la Panissière and the dolmens. Reach Col de la Panissière (signpost) and follow the signs to the right towards the Dolmens de la Grande Pallières (ignore the dolmen signposted on the left, as the route passes it further on). Further on, ignore a path on the right and continue to follow the signposts on the left.

(9) You will arrive at the first dolmen at the "Dolmens de la Grande Pallières" signpost. For a round trip, continue along an unmarked but well-marked path on the ridge to the right to discover two beautiful restored dolmens and some ancient ruined dolmens. Return to the first dolmen you came across.

(9) Back at the "Dolmens de la Grande Pallières" signpost, follow the direction of the Dolmen de Panissière. A few metres further on, veer off the path to the right to see the fourth dolmen. The path, still on the ridge (but with no view as it is in the undergrowth), then joins the beautiful restored dolmen of La Panissière (signposted "Dolmen de Panissière").

(10) Follow the signs for "Sous le dolmen" (Under the dolmen), but do not follow the direction indicated by the signpost as there are many paths leading off from the dolmen. Follow the path opposite the entrance to the burial mound. An ageing yellow marker is visible shortly afterwards. This beautiful path descends to a crossroads at the "Sous le dolmen" marker. Follow the signs for "Croix de Pallières" on the right. Further down, at the "Croix de Pallières" marker, turn left to find another "Croix de Pallières" marker.

(11) Follow the signs for Traviargue. Be careful to follow the yellow markings, as there are many paths leading off to the sides.

(12) Further down, the trail turns into a path at "la Frigoule" and then into a small road. When you reach a crossroads at the "Triviargue" signpost, turn left, on the left-hand side of the road, towards Lacan. On the other side of the road, you will see another signpost marked "Trivargue". Continue along the road towards Poulverel, following theGR®® (red and white) markings.

(13) Take a small road on the left. It leads to a traffic island. Continue straight ahead and, just before rejoining the road, turn left onto a smaller road that leads to a residential area.

(14) At a well and private property on the right, follow a grassy path. You will come to a small road; follow it to the left.

(15) You will come to a crossroads at the "la Poulverel" signpost. Continue straight ahead towards Madame d'Anduze , leaving theGR®® trail. At the intersections just after, keep right, following the yellow markings. At the "Madame d'Anduze" signpost, follow the direction of La Figuière. You will rejoin the red and white GR®® markings.

A hundred metres further on, be careful not to miss a path on the left of the street that leads down to another street. Continue to the right and follow the path that extends the street (stream in a private garden). You will come to another street. Follow it down to the Anduze steam train railway line and the "La Figuière" signpost.

(16) Follow the small street on the left towards Parc des Cordeliers. Enter the park and follow the GR®®. In short, always keep to the right. Quickly exit the park to find the "Parc des Cordeliers" sign and follow the direction of the Town Hall, first turning left then right to follow Rue Rabault Saint-Étienne. At the crossroads, continue straight on Rue de l'Écluse and turn left before the submersible bridge to return to the car park (S/E).

A lovely hike, with plenty of shade, so it’s best to go on sunny days. Stunning views from Les Capelans, then from the ridges of La Grande Pallière. It’s a shame there are long stretches along the road.
We found a pair of PRESCRIPTION SUNGLASSES (women’s) on the descent from the Grande Pallière. If the owner is reading this, please get in touch.

Be careful during the first few kilometres on the road to Saint Félix due to traffic.
Nice view from Les Capelans: see the monastery and the Cévennes gateway.
A varied route with several points of interest. Pleasant woodland. The distance and terrain make this hike a very good compromise.

A very pleasant walk with lovely views and some very interesting dolmens.
The walk should be even more enjoyable in the sunshine, especially as you're often in the trees.
A few too many roads, but having done it after a rainy day, that was rather an advantage.

The route can also be accessed from the Chemin de l'Olivier beside the "Les Enfant de Boisset" pottery, opposite the "Les Fauvettes" campsite.
From then on, you cross Anduze 2/3 of the way along the route, which is handy for refreshments.
For those already familiar with Anduze, just after the bridge over the railway line, there is the option of cutting across the very pretty Cordelier park.

A lovely walk, despite the tarmac, which wasn't a problem at all. It allowed us to discover Anduze in a different way.
The explanations for the dolmens are great and the site is magnificent.

Very nice walk. At point 9 continue, further on there are 2 menhirs with a beautiful panorama, it's worth it! Only the end of the walk is difficult because it's on a road, otherwise everything else is great! It's a lovely, very interesting trail with menhirs and cromlech to discover.

Magnificent walk, with splendid views from the Capelans and well-designed signs explaining the dolmens, with a few humorous touches
The gradient is very reasonable, giving you plenty of time to recover between each climb.
The road section at the start and finish in Anduze is well thought out, limiting the risks and allowing you to discover a little-known part of the village at the finish.
Would do again, thanks to the author

Hello
Last outing of 2023, we're locals and were looking for a distance with gradients to prepare for our next trek. First use of the route application. We succeeded in achieving 2 objectives: the outing was beautiful and the views were stunning, even in winter, the Cévennes are magical. Bonus: the dolmens at La Grande Pallière with explanatory panels produced by pupils from Florian College. We took a break at the end of the trail on Grande Palliere (one way round): perfect! Lovely views and guaranteed peace and quiet.
The tarmac sections weren't a problem and the final stretch through the Anduze neighbourhoods was a wonderful discovery.
Thank you for this trail!

Thank you for this hike, which combines the physical (kms) with the cultural (dolmens).we weren't particularly bothered by the sections on tarmac, which were small roads with no traffic, or even tarmac paths.it took us an hour less than planned, without hurrying.the sections in the undergrowth make this hike possible in all seasons.
