Description of the walk

Park in the car park opposite Marson Castle.

Blue markings

(S/E) At the corner of the car park, take the wooden log steps leading up to the left of the cellars. Continue along the edge of the woods, keeping the tennis court on your left (the path is faint). At the corner of the meadow, turn left, leaving the botanical trail on your right. Join a tarmac road and continue straight ahead for 20 metres.

(1) Turn left and walk along the castle’s outer wall, following the path. Ignore a path on the right and continue. The path will turn sharply left; shortly afterwards, ignore a path on the right and another on the left leading to a gate (not marked on the map).

At a junction, turn left onto a path, ignoring theGR®3to the right. Walk alongside the Étang de Marson and come out onto the D305.

(2) Follow the road to the right for 100m, then turn left onto the small tarmac road that passes under the power lines. At the next junction, turn left and follow the road, walking along the grass verge for about 500m.

(3) Take the path on the left into the forest. At the next Fork in the road, take the path on the right which descends slightly. On leaving the woods, ignore a path on the right and continue to an X-junction.

(4) Turn left onto the tarmac road and left again at the next junction. Continue for about 300m and look for a path branching off to the right. Leave the tarmac and follow this path to the next T-junction.

Head up the path on the left, pass under the power lines again and follow this path until it rejoins a tarmac road, at No. 7 Chemin de Moc Bare.

(5) Turn left onto the botanical trail. After taking a right-hand bend, pass two water points and exit the woods. Ignore a path on the right (not marked on the map) and continue for 10m to reach a junction. Turn left and enter the woods again, following the information signs.

(6) Just before reaching the houses, veer right to head towards the village. Leave the path on the right and continue between the houses to reach the D305. Turn left onto the road and you’ll find the car park at the very end on the right (S/E).

Worth a visit

Marson Castle, built in the Neo-Renaissance style, was rebuilt in the 19th century on the foundations of the old medieval fortress.

The 25-hectare Marson Pond, surrounded by reed beds, oak woods and clearings, is home to a wide variety of animal and plant species, some of which are protected.

A lovely, peaceful walk around Rou Marson Castle, a striking building nestled amongst woods and ponds.
The icing on the cake: right at the start of the route, along one of the castle walls, we came face to face with six or seven roe deer who didn’t give us time to react; after a few seconds, they turned on their heels and disappeared back into the forest.
The only slight downside: you have to walk along a few tarmac roads, but fortunately, there isn’t much traffic.

A pleasant stroll through the countryside and woodland of the Anjou region
In the late afternoon, I recommend having dinner at the restaurant “Les Caves de Marson”: a warm welcome, original cuisine in a great atmosphere; good value for money.

Perhaps the blue markings have been repainted? Personally, I think they’re excellent.
At (4), you take a track rather than a tarmac road.
At the end of the route, in the village, if you follow the blue markings, you take a detour through the woods. It’s longer, but very pleasant.
