The ruined sheepfolds of La Couillade and Campeaux

In this remote corner, two hours from the nearest village, families dedicated to farming lived just a few decades ago.

Description of the walk

Departure from the car park at Place de la Fédération.

(S/E) Cross the D117 and turn left for 50 metres. Turn right onto Rue des Augustins until you reach Place de l'Hôtel de Ville. Follow the signs for "Col de Saint-Louis". Cross the Pont de Quillan bridge over the Boulzane river and follow the D9 for 500 metres.

(1) Turn right onto theGR®36and follow the track lined with Chardonnay vines. At the crossroads, go straight ahead and walk for 400 metres

(2) Take the path on the right just after a hedge of tall cypress trees. The climb begins in open country without too much difficulty, but the slope becomes steeper. The path is pleasant, lined with holm oaks and a few junipers. Continue for 10 minutes through the undergrowth. A few low walls remind us that this area was cultivated not so long ago. Suddenly, the path becomes stony and the slope steepens further, with a series of easy hairpin bends. The vegetation changes, with oak trees giving way to boxwood. When you reach the plateau, turn left and continue for about 400 metres to reach the hamlet of Malabrac.

(3) Take the carriageway to the east and rejoin theGR®36200 metres further on. Follow the track and you will see the Pech de Bugarach (1,230 metres) ahead. Continue to the Col del Bedau crossroads.

(4) Continue on theGR®36(which is also theGRP® du Tour du Fenouillède) to the right until you reach the ruins of the Couillade sheepfold.

(5) Turn right and rejoin theGR®36. Continue downhill towards the ruins of Campeau, following the white and red markings ofthe GR®36. Watch out for animals, especially cows, which come to drink at the water reservoir.

(6) Begin the descent on theGR®36and reach the junction with the Ravin de Missaut trail.

(7) Then head into the woods along the Ravin de Missau, leaving the GR®. The first part is on the right bank and the second on the left bank. After Pescarou, you will reach a junction with the Sentier Cathare.

(8) Take it on the right, ignore all the paths on your right and reach the D9.

(9) Take it on the right, towards Caudiès-de-Fenouillèdes. Cross the "heath bridge" over the Boulzane, turn left and continue for 300m. Reach the D117. Turn right to the tourist office and the car park (S/E).

Practical information

The route is very stony, so good footwear is essential.
If the weather is sunny, the plateau between Malabrac and the start of the Ravin de Missaut is exposed, so be careful of sunburn and protect yourself with sun cream and a hat.
Watch out for animals; there are a few signs to remind you. Dogs are not allowed (so as not to scare the flocks). Be careful, there may be some electric fences.
At the Campeau sheepfold, the path back to Caudiès is quite "chaotic". It must be said that the route, although very shady between two ash hedges, is very stony and deviates from the officialGR®36 route. It is therefore up to each individual to leave the route, but in the end all paths lead back to the same place.

In the nearby area

If you set off early and there is no one ahead of you, you may hear and even see wild boars.
Near the Couillade sheepfold, take the time to admire a remarkable ash tree.
On the Malabrac plateau, you can see the Pech de Bugarach. It will disappear behind the mountains but you will find it again as you approach the Couillade sheepfold.

A very pleasant hike through woodland and pastures. The climb is not that easy in the steepest section. In contrast, the descent is fairly steady and does not present any difficulties.

Our hike was exactly as described. I downloaded the route you suggested onto my GPS. There is nothing to add to the description (PDF file), which matches the route perfectly. It was a beautiful hike that the group thoroughly enjoyed. Thank you for the variety of options on your website.

A very beautiful hike. After a somewhat steep climb, you discover a magnificent landscape with a beautiful view of Bugarach.
Highly recommended (don't forget to bring water in good weather).

Very beautiful hike.
The climb was a bit steep at the beginning but relatively short.
The heat (30°C) was mitigated by the fact that most of the route was in the shade and there was a light tramontane wind.
Among the many signs (GR, yellow, yellow-red), it's best to follow the trail signs and trail 5 at the end.
We'll definitely do it again.
thank you

Very beautiful route with stunning views, sunny but almost always in the shade
The problem is the descent down the rocks and scree, you need to be very careful and have good shoes
Well done to whoever found this route

Completed on 5 April 2021. Very well signposted GR + trail no. 5.
We missed the first hamlet because we had to leave the GR at one point, but otherwise it was a very beautiful, varied walk with superb views.
Make sure you have good shoes for the end, as the descent is on a pile of small and medium-sized stones, which are slippery.
Thanks again!

A wonderful hike that we had already done in the right direction. This time, we went in the opposite direction, which makes the climb much easier for people who are afraid of heights. We extended the hike to 15 km to enjoy the magnificent view of Bugarach from below. It's the most beautiful view and not to be missed. Take the cow path on the right in the middle of the large plateau at kilometre 7.500 (I put a cairn there), climb a steep slope through the vegetation until you reach the cliff. And there, what an incredible sight!

A very beautiful hike, starting with a steep climb, but the plateau is really worth it, with magnificent landscapes and picturesque herds of animals... It is recommended not to disturb them...
Go there, you won't be disappointed!
