Les Baux-de-Provence, Carrières des Lumières: between stone and light

Perched on its rocky outcrop, the village of Les Baux-de-Provence welcomes you like a life-size film set. Here, every cobbled street and every sculpted façade seems to whisper centuries of history. Stroll among the stone houses, Renaissance mansions, discreet chapels and ramparts overlooking the valleys. The view of the Alpilles is breathtaking.
As you climb to the heights, the Château des Baux offers you a glimpse into medieval times: a fortress carved into the rock, war machines and breathtaking views of the heath. It reveals the village's warrior spirit.
And to end the day on a high note, head to the Val d'Enfer, just below. There, the Carrières des Lumières await you for a unique, almost magical sensory experience that prolongs the emotion of the village in another register: that of living art.

Description of the walk

To reach the starting point, head towards the village of Les Baux-de-Provence. You will arrive at the foot of the village on the D27, where you will find paid parking on both sides of the road. Please note that depending on the season, it may be difficult to park.

(S/E) Depending on where you park, head south-west on the D27 until you reach a stone staircase. Begin the ascent via the Chemin des Remparts, then turn right at the intersection to continue climbing. Enter the village via the Porte d'Eyguières and continue to Place Louis Joux.

(1) Turn right to continue along the paved slanting street. At the fork, turn right to reach the Chapelle des Pénitents Blancs. Enjoy the sublime panorama over the Vallon de la Fontaine. Turn around and continue right on Rue des Fours, then right again on Rue du Trancat. You will arrive in front of the Chapelle Saint-Blaise des Baux-de-Provence.

(2) Continue straight ahead, pass the entrance to the Château des Baux-de-Provence and follow the path that leads to the Éperon des Baux to admire the superb panoramic views of the vineyards and the Alpilles. Pass the statue of Charloun Rieu and continue along the path along the rocky spur, which will eventually bring you back to the entrance to the Château des Baux-de-Provence.

(3) You can visit the site (entrance fee applies) or continue along Rue du Trencat, strolling through the cobbled streets, where the façades seem to whisper centuries of history. You will then arrive in front of the town hall.

(4) Continue down the village along the main street. Pass the tourist office to reach a car park. Continue until you see a staircase on the left. Go down to the D27A and follow this road to the junction with the D27. Cross carefully and head towards the Carrières des Lumières. Continue along the safe hard shoulder to the entrance to the site.

(5) After visiting the Carrières des Lumières site, take the D27 in the opposite direction to return to the car park (S/E).
