The Balconies of Manosque: the Blue Grotto and the Luberon ridge

Les Balcons de Manosque is the title of a series of walks organised by the Manosque Heritage Committee (CPM) that allow you to discover the town’s heritage beyond its walls.
This route takes us along the Luberon ridge and then descends through the "Ravin des Couquières". Amidst a magnificent landscape dominated by woodland, you will discover a troglodyte dwelling, the remains of a clay quarry, the "source des maquisards", a water mine and the mysterious Blue Cave.

Description of the walk

The route begins at the entrance to La Rochette Cemetery, known as the ‘new cemetery’, which is located past the swimming pool of the same name. Park in the large shaded car park.

(S/E) Return to the road, turn right and immediately turn right onto Chemin de la Rochette. After a short climb of about 150 m, take the path on the right blocked by large boulders. Climb up to the road and follow it to the right for about a hundred metres.
Just after the sign for Manosque (which is blocked off), take the road on the left (Chemin de Saint Martin-les-Eaux). At the junction, turn right. Continue until you reach a bend where there is a small viewpoint, set up with whatever was to hand. Enjoy a stunning view here of Manosque, the Valensole plateau and the Chiran massif.

(1) Continue along the road until you see a path climbing up to the left along the side of the embankment. This path is 20 metres before the barrier blocking access to private property.
You’ll come out onto a clearing bordered on the right by a magnificent grove of Austrian pines and on the left by a DFCI water tank.

(2) Take the track at a 90° right turn, then 50 m further on, take the path on the left indicated by a signpost with a green ring. About a hundred metres further on, you will see a troglodytic dwelling on the left.
Continue along the path leading to the Luberon ridge. Ignore a path branching off to the left. Follow the ridge. At the bottom of the very steep descent, about twenty metres before reaching a wide track, look out for green and red markings on the ground.

(3) Turn left and join a track. Do not take it, but cross it to take the small path directly opposite. Very steep, it quickly leads to the road below which serves the Géosel facilities, an underground hydrocarbon storage site.
Take this road on the left, then less than 50 m further on, look out for a small path on the right. Follow it for just under 100 m to a strange metal structure spanning a small ravine; this is the Source des Maquisards

(4) Turn back, return to the Géosel road, take it to the left until you reach the Route du Col de la Mort d’Imbert, which you follow towards the pass. Just after the pass, turn slightly left onto the forest track. Go through the gate and take the track on the right. Follow it downhill for about 1.5 km. Cross a bridge and, just after, take a path on the right, running parallel to the stream (dry except in the event of a storm). After 100 m, this path leads to an old ventilation shaft from the Gaude lignite mine, which is private property.

(5) Less than 50 m after the bridge, take the path on the left marked by a post with a green band. You will walk alongside the Riou. At the large waterfall, marked by a post with a green band and the number 32, note a window measuring approximately 1 m x 1 m on the left bank. This was the entrance to the Peyroulets water mine.
Continue along the path. It turns right to cross the Riou and climbs up to a large open area, opposite the crematorium. Take the road on the left which leads you back to the cemetery.

(S/E) If you still have a bit of energy left, almost opposite the climb up to the cemetery, you will see a green-bordered sign indicating a path below the road. This fairly steep path, less than 100 m long, takes you to the Grand Chêne, a site much loved by the people of Manosque in days gone by.

(6) Follow the same route back to the cemetery car park (S/E).

Notes

The brochure *Les balcons de Manosque*, published by the Manosque Heritage Committee (CPM), which created this route, provides full details of the heritage sites you will encounter along the way. Available at the Tourist Office and in all good bookshops in Manosque, by purchasing it you will be contributing to the preservation and promotion of Manosque’s heritage. It describes six other heritage-rich walking routes.

Worth a visit

(3) Green and Red Trails: 'These are clay deposits. There used to be a quarry here and the tile works was next to the house you can just make out through the vegetation.
(4) Source des Maquisards: the door is open, so you can have a look inside. The metal structure supports the pipework that carried water from the spring to the Château de Pélissier, which is, in reality, just a large building.
(6) Grotte Bleue: this is also where the Manosque mermaid mentioned on a sign was extracted. Access to the cave is difficult, even dangerous, and the site is in a state of neglect. It is located downstream of the bridge, on the left bank at the waterfall. You can get down there either via the left bank, which is very, very steep, or via the right bank, which is slightly less steep but more overgrown and takes longer.

I was expecting a more stunning, more breathtaking view... We had to go back and forth several times because the directions aren’t very clear (luckily, the app and GPS feature helped, because if I’d set off as I always do with just a map, we’d have got completely lost...)

A rather uninteresting hike: it starts with a good half-hour along a dull road, followed by a slightly more scenic but short stretch with limited views; there’s a lack of route information, and you return to the car after the uninteresting pass.

Hello
Just a quick note to let you know that there’s a fork in the road as you approach the Col de la Mort d’Imbert, and you need to turn left, not right! It’s not obvious when you’re actually there...

Thank you, all the same, for your efforts in suggesting the hike. But this time it wasn’t great – it lacked detail. Up to the sign for Manosque (which was crossed out), then the path to St Martin-les-Eaux, no problem. It’s after that that things get tricky: the little viewpoint – which one? The one with a bin, or the one further on with a rickety wooden bench? The path on the left along the slope—the one we took—led us down a steep track, past the barrier 20 metres away, without ever finding the landmarks described in your route map (cistern, water, gas, buried?, signpost, cave dwelling, etc.). In short,we went back and forth endlessly, eventually taking a path on the right as we descended from the summit, ending up on the road, right next to the viewpoint with the rickety bench. Hooray, a little picnic and a lovely view of Manosque. Luckily it wasn’t too late; we returned to the car we’d left at the cemetery to finish our trip by car at the Col de la Mort d’Imbert. In my opinion, this wasn’t the planned route at all.No signposts, no marked trail anywhere. The route for this hike needs to be revised and simplified, as instructions like ‘head off at an angle’, ‘turn 90°’ or ‘slope side’ don’t really help you make progress. Of course, we didn’t have a GPS app on our mobile. We still got some fresh air, though, and that’s not bad, especially with the lovely weather. See you soon.

The first section (almost up to point 2) is on a tarmac road, which is fortunately very quiet.
The path along the Luberon ridge offers beautiful views to the south and north, through varied woodland.
The descent along the track is a gentle one. For the more adventurous, there is an alternative route that includes Mont des Spels. Thanks to the author of this walk!

We have combined three walks from the Manosque Balconies into a single day’s hike, adding a visit to the summit of Mont des Spels.
The Blue Cave, which is off-limits unless accompanied by a guide, according to the chairman of the Manosque Heritage Committee himself.
Otherwise, very beautiful scenery and wonderful discoveries.

A beautiful trail at this time of year, with the snow-capped Alps in the background.
