The medieval village of Cotignac

The medieval village of Cotignac is one of the "Most Beautiful Villages in France" and was voted "France's Favourite Village" in 2022. The impressive Tuf Rock and its troglodyte dwellings, the Chapel of Notre-Dame-de-Grâces, the old 16th and 17th century houses lining the narrow streets, the Cours Gambetta with its beautiful façades and plane trees, the 17th century Church of Notre Dame de l'Annonciation, the Grand-Rue, the Town Hall Square, the 17 fountains and the two 14th-century towers are the main attractions in Cotignac. The route crosses the Cours Gambetta, climbs up to the Chapel of Notre-Dame des Grâces, continues along the Chemin de Notre Dame, descends towards the village through the Les Verdares and Le Derroc districts, then passes through the Ville-Haute and the Rocher cliff.

We preferred to start from the car park just before the tourist office, as we wanted to add a visit to the Trompines waterfall to our route. So we started at point 2 (having done the other visits between 1 and 2 on the way back). We made our round trip to the waterfall (not much water, but a very pretty spot) starting opposite the tourist office, between the bridge and the municipal police station on the "Vallon Gaï", which added a few kilometres, of course.

We followed the description for the rest of the walk. We took our time exploring the Sanctuary (don't miss the little path that goes up to the right before point 3. It is marked with a cross on a stone carved with two little angels, see photo).

We made the round trip to the towers, which are well worth seeing.

Visits to the caves had been suspended since 1 September, which disappointed many visitors standing in front of the closed gate. The view of the caves is still impressive, and we were able to photograph a few troglodytes.
The walk through the old streets is very pleasant (pretty, unusual doors, fountains, caryatids – don't forget to look up!).
