The village of Dehault and its hillsides

A lovely walk around the village of Dehault, through which the Montreteau flows. A hilly route with some beautiful sunken lanes.

Description of the walk

Park in the church car park.

(S/E) Follow the road uphill past the church entrance, walk past the castle entrance, then turn left onto a small tarmac road.

(1) Leave the road after about 400 m and turn left onto a dirt track which crosses cultivated fields and then descends between the hedgerows. Cross the Montretaux stream and emerge onto a small road, which you follow to the left.

(2) Turn left at the Moulin de la Roberie and follow a tarmac track which becomes a gravel track and leads to the village on the D59.

(3) Turn right towards La Chapelle du Bois and, after 200 m, before the wayside cross, take a grassy track on the left which climbs and joins the D59; follow this straight on for about 400 m.

(4) Turn left onto a small tarmac road, passing La Dortière and La Dorbelière. Further on, ignore the access road to Le Regret on the left and begin a gentle descent.

(5) Leave the road and turn left onto a sunken track. Follow this very damp track as it winds through cultivated fields and arrives at a place called La Gare on a small tarmac road, which you take to the left. You’ll reach another tarmac road, the Route de la Nogent-le-Bernard.

(6) Turn left and follow this road to the village and the car park where you started (S/E).

Avoid this during periods of heavy rain, or make sure you’re wearing waterproof shoes.

Hello,

Too many roads! The route is good from 1km to 4km, but after that it’s not very interesting.

It would be worth finding other paths (if possible) to complement the start...

At the start: all the roads near the church go uphill; there are three of them. A local man pointed out the best one to me. This walk is very pleasant. Very little road, with plenty of sections along sunken paths and through woodland. Do bear in mind, however, the time of year you take this walk, as peak times may restrict access to certain areas. At point 5, you really must take the path on the left; there are no signs there, so it’s easy to hesitate. I’m not sure if this is the most suitable route. Nature won’t thank us if too many people actually venture out here. The description mentions a damp path; personally, my feet were in water, but that was also down to the time of year the walk was done. We also cross quite a few fields. After that, I must have gone a bit astray as I didn’t arrive directly at the LD ‘la gare’. Apart from this point 5, which needs to be better signposted on the ground or explained in more detail in the description, I enjoyed this walk. The sections near the river are stunning and pleasant.
