Le Val Hervelin, the valley and the Manor of Saint-Meleuc

A pleasant walk that takes you through the charming valley of the Ruisseau de Coëtquen, also known as the Val Hervelin – which is also the name of the village – on a return trip. The route is generally very pleasant and the path runs largely through woodland. It also offers the chance to discover a few old houses, particularly in St-Méleuc and La Forge. It takes you to a megalithic site in the Tougeais forest, north of the hamlet known as ‘Les Rouchiviers’. There are no significant difficulties, but the valley floor may be very wet during wet weather and the stream may even burst its banks.

Description of the walk

(S/E) Facing north (with the road behind you), start on the path to the right and follow it, keeping a general north to north-north-westerly direction. There are several paths that do not always intersect, but this direction provides a good guide.

(1) At a junction, continue straight on along the path at the edge of the forest, which then leads into the undergrowth. Keep heading generally north to north-north-west until you see a makeshift wooden bridge across the stream below. Walk down the slope and cross the stream via the bridge.

(2) On the other side, turn right.

(3) Shortly afterwards, head up to the left. Follow the path to the road.

(4) Follow it to the right, uphill, for about 300 metres. Turn left onto the path towards the hamlet of La Helluais. Cross it heading west.

(5) At the crossroads, turn right then immediately left onto the stony track. This leads onto a road which you follow to the left. At the next crossroads, turn right towards the Manoir de Saint-Meleuc, a magnificent 15th-century building.

(6) Continue towards Beauvais and turn right onto the dirt track that runs alongside a stream.

(7) After 300 metres, follow the path on the right. Join a stony farm track and follow it to the right. The track turns into a sunken path, which is damp in season. It leads to the hamlet known as "la Saudrais".

(8) Continue to the wayside cross and, at the road junction, take the road on the left to the Croix Lombgeais.

(9) Continue left downhill for 400 metres.

Turn onto the first path on the right and head towards the hamlet of L'Hôpital.

(10) Cross the road and follow the path opposite.

(11) At the fork, take the path on the right. It winds through the vegetation for about a hundred metres before widening out. Follow it towards the summit to discover a fairly significant megalithic site, though it is not at all well-presented.

(12) Retrace your steps back to the previous fork.

(11) Turn right to reach the road. Follow it down to the right and, at the junction, turn right again towards the hamlet of Les Rouchiviers.

Yellow markings

(13) Turn left into the first lane leading towards Le Val.

No markings

(3) At the junction you passed on the way out, continue straight ahead.

(2) At the next junction, ignore the bridge on the left and go straight on. The path zigzags along the stream. Go round a pond on the left. The path climbs to join a junction taken at the very start of the walk.

(1) Follow the path to the right to return to the starting point (S/E).

Notes

Park at the side of the road near the cave below.

Worth a visit

(S/E) It was built in 1949. It was erected in response to the wishes of the inhabitants of this hamlet, who wanted to thank the Virgin Mary for sparing them during the bloody battles that took place in the region at the time of the Liberation.
