The Moroccan Brigade Trail

Designed and developed by the municipality of Chauconin-Neufmontiers, this route pays tribute to the Moroccan soldiers who fought on the very spot where they were engaged in the early days of the Battle of Ourcq, from 5 September 1914, on the western front of the Battle of the Marne. A short memorial hike, mostly in woodland with extensive views over the cultivated plain dotted with a few witness mounds.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: Paths of remembrance from the Great War

Description of the walk

Departure from the town hall of Chauconin-Neufmontiers (spacious car park), on the Neufmontiers site, a few kilometres north-west of Meaux.
N.B. The commune is the result of the merger of the former communes of Chauconin and Neufmontiers, and there is still a building in Chauconin with "Mairie" written on the pediment, but the departure point is in Neufmontiers.

One-way signage (in the direction of the description) using signs depicting the silhouette of a Moroccan soldier from 1914. These signs are located at intersections, usually on dedicated posts. They are also located at the eight stages of the route, which are indicated in the description and detailed in the "During the hike" section, but which do not generally coincide with the waypoints on the route.

(S/E) Opposite the town hall, stage 1 (with map) is located at the bottom left of the building. From there, cross the adjacent street and go to the front of Saint-Barthélémy Church (information panel on the right-hand side, stage 2 on the left-hand side). Follow the arrow to stage 3, take the alleyway that starts to the right of the Espace Michel Colluci and runs along a wall on the right-hand side. At the first crossroads, turn left, walk along a tennis court on your right and enter the cemetery on your left (stage 3; officers' graves just to the right of the entrance). Retrace your steps and, at the previous crossroads, follow a paved path to the left towards stage 4, which soon gives way to a field path.

(1) At the crossroads (shrubs on the left-hand side), continue straight ahead (north-west) between the fields. When you reach some trees (stage 4), ignore a path on the left (shown as a green hedge on the IGN map) and continue straight ahead downhill towards stage 5. At the crossroads at the bottom of the hill, turn right. At the T-junction that follows, take a small road on the right and climb gently.

(2) At the crossroads (stage 5), ignore the farm track on the left and continue on the tarmac road. At the first houses, note a path on the right at the foot of a "30km/h speed limit" sign (this will be the return route) and continue straight ahead. At the stop sign (information sign), turn left onto Rue Georges Frisez, which climbs gently through a residential area.

(3) After No. 35, turn left onto Sente de la Loge. Just after a right-hand bend, go through a forest gate (information sign) and follow a path northwards, first between two fields and then along the edge of woods or wasteland on your right. Pass at the foot of an electricity pole on the left-hand side and reach stage 6. Continue north on the path towards stage 7 and arrive at an information board.

(4) Then turn right at a right angle and enter the woods. The path (not shown on the map) climbs slightly, winding a little while keeping a general eastward direction. At the end of this path, turn left onto a wider path. At the bottom of a short descent, turn right towards stage 7, climb again and follow a fence on your left.

(5) At the top of the hill, leave the "official" route for a moment, turn right and go around a small clearing on the right. Enter the woods again and you will soon reach a geodesic chimney. Facing the information board, turn left and descend a few metres, describing an arc to the left. You will reach the small clearing.

(5) Then turn right and rejoin the main path, descending for about 200 metres.

(6) Ignore the path on the right leading to stage 8 and continue straight on towards stage 7. After about 100 metres, ignore a path on the left and continue downhill. After about 150 metres, turn right onto a narrow path, which descends quite steeply and is interspersed with a few wooden steps. At the edge of the field, you will reach the Hugot-Derville Stele (stage 7).

(7) Retrace your steps along the steep path, then turn left uphill. Ignore the path on the right.

(6) At the next crossroads, turn left onto a good, fairly flat path. After a slight descent, you will come to a crossroads (information sign). Turn left (stage 8) and go through a forest gate. Continue along a narrow lane (Chemin de Montassis).

(3) At the junction you took on the way out, continue slightly downhill along Rue Georges Frisez. At the stop sign, ignore the "official" signposting which tells you to continue straight ahead and, to avoid the tarmac, turn right. After about 100 metres (30km/h sign), take a gravel path on the left which quickly becomes grassy.

(1) At the end of the path, turn left. At the crossroads you took on the way there, near a tennis court, continue straight ahead. Return to Saint-Barthémély Church and, from there, very quickly to the town hall (S/E).

Stages of the Moroccan Brigade Trail, in reference to the battles of September 1914:
- Stage 1 - Town hall, which was a residential building at the time.
- Stage 2 - Saint-Barthélémy Church (19th century), which took in wounded soldiers of various nationalities.
- Stage 3 - Cemetery with, at the entrance, the graves of three officers of the Moroccan Brigade killed in action.
- Stage 4 - View of the plain that the soldiers had to cross in the open to storm the Butte de Montassis, visible on the right.
- Stage 5 - Location of the old cemetery where the remains of soldiers from the Moroccan Brigade were buried before being transferred to the cemetery in Chambry in 1915. Today, there is no trace of this cemetery.
- Stage 6 - German army positions, with a clear view of the plain. The Germans also occupied Montassis Hill, at the foot of which we now stand, and Monthyon Hill, clearly visible to the north.
- Stage 7 - Memorial stone in honour of Guy Hugot-Derville, an officer in the Brigade who was killed on 5 September and buried on site in accordance with his wishes, as well as in honour of two of his brothers who were killed on other fronts.
- Stage 8 - Summary of the battle.

Other sites along the route:
- Viewpoint over the witness hills (information panel) (4).
- Geodetic chimney, near (5), erected at the beginning of the 20th century at the highest point of the hill, to enable the creation of geographical maps by triangulation (explanations on site).

Contrary to what is stated in the title (mostly in the undergrowth), it is actually two-thirds open and one-third in the undergrowth.
The stele was accessible via a small path leading downhill.

A very pleasant and informative hike through fields and forest. There are two short sections on the Montassis hill where the path has been diverted, but it is easy to find your bearings.

A very pleasant walk, with few towns and lots of paths through forests and fields.
Please note: the stone marker at point 7 is not accessible, as the small path leading down to it is blocked by branches, brambles, etc

A short but very enjoyable hike in winter, as we didn't meet anyone else along the way. What's more, this route has a history. Be careful, though, as it's a bit muddy at the moment and slippery in places. Just make sure you wear the right footwear.

We first scouted out the circuit. It should be noted that parking is more difficult if you are coming as a group. The town hall car park is closed outside of opening hours. The route was somewhat muddy, so it is best to do it in dry weather. The signs that are supposed to mark the route are missing or damaged. A few have stood the test of time. We even took the time to straighten one that was lying on the ground. There was also a hunt taking place, so we imagined what the atmosphere must have been like in 1914, but quieter, except for the deer that crossed our path as it fled. It's a beautiful walk that requires maintenance by the local council. To be done alone or during the 17 km hike in memory of Charles Péguy, starting from Villeroy.

A lovely, easy walk that allowed me to discover a geodesic chimney. My thoughts, of course, go out to all those who died in the "Great" War.

A fairly standard walk through fields and woods. Worth doing to remember our history and that of the Moroccan soldiers who fought for France. A few information boards provide interesting explanations about the period. The descriptions are sometimes vague (I couldn't find point 7).

We went on this walk yesterday. It's an interesting route that reminds us of history.
What's more, it was warm yesterday. Part of the walk is in the woods, so it's very pleasant.

A pleasant walk (cold today, but sunny and windless). Probably windy, the whole section along the edge of the forest would be terrible.
The only problem was that I couldn't follow the directions from the forest entrance. I never found the electricity pole (I think it's been removed) and from there I probably took a longer route. In short, for future visitors, turn at the sign for stage 7.
Fortunately, the terrain makes it easy to catch up and find your way back.
The route isn't very busy, but you still come across people regularly

Ideal family outing. Between plains, forests and culture.
Picnic next to the geodesic fireplace.
It's a shame that some of the information signs have disappeared.
A superb day!

Excellent in every respect: well signposted, fields stretching as far as the eye can see, forest, and heritage with the 1914-18 war trail. A very pleasant walk in the heart of nature.

Disappointed by the lack of remains of the Moroccan brigade.
The part in the woods is very nice.
The geodesic chimney is superb.
More people in the wooded area than on the plain.
