Le Saix via the Trompes du Fay

In this spot, situated at the bottom of a closed cirque, the Trompes du Faï, nestled in the grass, amplify the music played there: an impressive natural organ that uses the cliffs and, through a cathedral-like effect, fills the entire valley.

Description of the walk

Park your car before or after the town hall in Le Saix.

(S/E) Start in front of the town hall, walk down Rue de la Seigneurie then cross the bridge on Route de Clausonne. Continue for 200 m until you reach a fork.

(1) Take the path on the right; you will walk alongside the Torrent de Maraise. When you see the bridge, head back up towards the Route de Clausonne.

(2) Follow the road to the right and walk alongside the stream with its natural pools. As you continue, you will see natural wooden artworks. Avoid a few bends in the road and join the fork leading to the visitor centre.

(3) Take the path on the left which climbs up to Le Fay, then cross through this area, which is an international visitor centre. Here you will see the famous Le Fay trumpets. With a bit of luck, you may even hear them, depending on the time of day. Continue along this path to reach the road which follows the stream as it climbs.

(4) Walk past the Virgin Mary, who watches over you and heralds the arrival of Clausonne Abbey. Continue straight on until you reach a fork leading to the mill.

(5) Take the path on the right that leads down and cross the stream via the small bridge. Explore the ruins of an ancient abbey, then continue out the back onto the path that leads back to the road and take it to the left. After about 50 metres, look out for a path on the right.

(6) Head up the path on the right, passing a botanical garden opposite the abbey.
Continue climbing to the forest road and carry on to the left, then straight ahead at the next fork.

(7) At the top of the ridge, enjoy the view over the valley and the village of Le Saix. Continue down the forest road until you reach the junction with a path leading down to the left.

(8) Turn left and follow this somewhat steep path through the forest down to the road to Clausonne. Cross the bridge and return to the junction you passed on the way out.

(2) Follow the road towards the village of Le Saix, then to the town hall square (S/E).

A lovely, peaceful walk, except for the steep descent through the forest on the way back

A beautiful hike in the Hautes Alpes, accessible to all. We were there as a family with two children. We added a climb up to the ridge, which offers some stunning panoramic views

Hello Guillaume,
I can imagine what it’s like in the gorges; if the sun’s out, it must be lovely.
That little path through the woods is tough, even in summer.
Best regards
Charry

A magnificent hike. We did it after some snowfall – it was absolutely stunning!
In winter, make sure you pack warm clothes as the gorges and north-facing slopes mean low temperatures.
The abbey is an ideal spot for a picnic.
For the return journey, there is indeed a path through the forest (which doesn’t appear on maps but is very well marked), and it’s best to have good shoes and walking poles as it’s quite steep, and it can get slippery with fallen leaves and/or snow (we had a mix of both, which was great fun :-).

Hello Blue Sky
As for the trumpets, they’re often heard in July and August.
The descent through the forest is steep, I must admit.
Glad you enjoyed the hike.

We would have liked to have allowed more time to enjoy the stream and its pools.
The area around the water spouts seemed deserted; I don’t know if they’re still in use.
The area around the abbey, which is currently being renovated, is very nice.
The way back through the forest was really steep and tough, but we managed it, even the 6- and 8-year-olds.
A varied and very pleasant walk.
