Saint-Mont via Vieux Saint-Amé

A beautiful shaded walk in the Fossard Forest, which has no shortage of points of interest: the beautiful Chapelle du Vieux Saint-Amé, the magnificent Saint-Mont esplanade, the Pont des Fées and the Miraumont waterfall. At the summit of Saint-Mont, a vast grassy area is ideally suited for a picnic break and offers, as a bonus, a magnificent 360° panorama of the Moselle and Moselotte valleys.

Description of the walk

Access: from Saint-Étienne-lès-Remiremont, at the roundabout in the centre, head towards the mobile gendarmerie barracks.
Park in the car parks near the mobile gendarmerie barracks, Rue des5e et15e BCP in Saint-Étienne-les-Remiremont.

Yellow diamond markings

(S/E) From the barracks, take the road uphill.

(1) At the first intersection, turn right onto the small road uphill, which runs alongside some houses. At the top, at the car park, enter the forest opposite via the path on the left, which turns right 50 metres further on and becomes an uphill trail. Continue along this trail, following the markings. It is a pretty trail that runs alongside a logging road. Then join this logging road and continue straight ahead. A little further on, turn right for a slight detour via Haute Borne. The path then becomes relatively flat until you reach a sign indicating the access to the Chapelle du Vieux Saint-Amé.

(2) At the sign, descend to the right. Be careful on the descent, as the path is rocky and steep, but the chapel is well worth the effort! Once there, you can take advantage of the tables and benches to rest before the climb to Saint-Mont. Continue the walk, go around the chapel on the left and then pass in front of the Grotte de Saint-Amé to reach a path. The climb is a little steep and rocky too: be careful!

(3) Once you reach a grassy plateau, at a driveway, turn right and go through the gate (commune of Saint-Amé, Saint-Mont site) and continue along this path until the next crossroads,

(4) Turn left towards Saint-Mont via the chapels to reach Saint-Mont, passing in front of archaeological excavations that appear to be abandoned.

(5) At Saint-Mont, enjoy the 360° view and the facilities on site. To descend, cross the Saint-Mont site and take the access road by car towards the Pont des Fées.

Blue Ring Markings

(6) Make a right turn to see the Pont des Fées. On your return, continue to the right.

No markings

(7) At the crossroads, leave the Blue Ring markings, which go up to the left towards Saint-Mont, and turn right. Continue toDomaine Saint-Romary after crossing a small road. At the estate, turn right towards the car park, then left to walk along the right-hand side of the estate.

Red Triangle markings

(8) Join a small path that enters the forest and descends to the Miraumont Waterfall. After the waterfall, continue along the path that runs alongside the stream and joins a road (Chemin de Miraumont).

(9) Take this road on the left, which leads back to the police station.

(1) Turn right towards the car park (S/E).

Notes

Classified as a medium hike due to the descent to the Chapelle du Vieux Saint-Amé and the climb to Saint-Mont, which are quite steep and rocky in places. Good footwear is essential.

There are places to stop for a break at the Chapelle du Vieux St-Amé, with tables and benches (shaded), and on the large grassy esplanade of Saint-Mont, which is beautifully laid out with two sheltered picnic tables and numerous benches (sun or shade, as you prefer).

Worth a visit

Saint-Mont, or Mont Habend, is a mountain 672 metres high located in the Fossard massif. It has been a place of worship since ancient times. Gauls, Romans and Christians have all worshipped their gods here. The current chapel dates from 1852.

The Pont des Fées, listed as a Historic Monument, is a mysterious relic located between Saint-Amé and Saint-Étienne-lès-Remiremont, in the heart of a magnificent forest. Built of dry stone at an unknown date, it is 29 metres long, 13 metres wide and 7 metres high. This bridge served as a passage between Saint-Mont and the Fossard Massif.
