The Roc de Pampelune and its oppidum, and the Dolmen A at Mas Reynard

A getaway to discover unusual places, notably the Rocher de Pampelune and its oppidum, as well as the Dolmen A at Mas Reynard. These iconic sites transport us to a distant past, allowing us to discover them. Some effort will be required to reach them, involving crossing paths, trails, streams, passages through undergrowth and coppice, and a few technical sections suitable for all. There are plenty of surprises in store for those who take the time to explore.

Description of the walk

Access: from Montarnaud, head north towards Argeliers. At a left-hand bend on the uphill stretch, at the road-path junction, turn right onto the DFCI track, near the pumping station. Park your vehicle in the dirt car park bordered by scrubland, opposite the station which is protected by a fence.

(S/E) Heading south-east, at the corner of the station, turn left onto the path without joining the road. Join a two-way track and continue left, heading north-east. Cross a stream and reach a junction. Turn left under the scrub, walk along a stream-side path heading north to reach a multi-way junction.

(1) Turn right for about fifty metres, then at the next junction, turn left through the scrub heading north. At a fork with two directions, keep left to continue heading north-east. Keep right at the next fork, skirting Lake Guizard, which is a large pond on your left. After a left-hand bend, you’ll reach a three-way junction in an open area.

(2) Go straight on, cross a small hillock beneath a hunter’s lookout, heading north-west: the path is not shown on the map. Reach a junction, go straight on for 30 metres and reach a crossroads. Turn right up a slope heading north-east towards the Bois de Guinée. Avoid all turn-offs. Take a left-hand bend heading north-west and cross the Bois de Guinée along its edge to reach a DFCI junction.

(3) Turn right heading east then north-east downhill. At the bend, keep to the right, cross a stream and negotiate a hairpin bend to the left to reach a junction marked by a cairn.

(4) Take the path on the right through the coppice, heading east then north.

(5) Return to the path you left earlier and continue to the right along the path. Reach theGRP® Tours in the Grand Pic Saint-Loup.

(6) Turn right onto it and follow the yellow-red markings. After a series of bends, walk past the Priory and its cross. Cross a stream at a bend and reach a crossroads.

(7) Keep to the right to stay on theGRP®. Pass Saugras, walking past a stone cross on your right. At the next bend, leave theGRP® briefly by turning right, then rejoin it at the end of the bend. Take it again to the left. Pass between two rocks, cross a stream, keep the Champ de l’Hort on your right and reach a crossroads in open ground.

(8) Turn right. Walk alongside a fenced-off area on your right for 30 m. At the start of an uphill path, go through a gate, close it behind you, and continue south-eastwards, then south-westwards after a right-hand bend. Reach a cairn to begin the Roc de Pampelune circular loop and its oppidum

(9) Turn right and continue straight uphill heading west. After a bend, reach a section. At the cairn marking the junction of the path, turn left, continue through the undergrowth and coppice, following the visible trail which is marked throughout by cairns. Reach another cairn. At the cairn marking the junction of the path, turn left to reach the starting point of the archaeological site. Boundary of the Roc de Pampelune and the summit of the climbing point; follow the GPS track.

(10) Cross the northern part of the ruins, keeping to the left on the descending path. At the cairn where the path joins, keep left as you descend and reach the junction of the circular path.

(9) Turn right downhill and rejoin the GRP®.

(11) Turn left onto it and you will soon reach the Y-junction ofthe PR® marked by yellow marker no. 7. Keep to the right, cross a stream and follow the Bois de l'Aven on your right. When you reach the fork in the bend, keep to the right and reach a junction: please note, this junction is offset from the map, which is incorrect.

(12) Turn left, stay on thePR® and reach the D127. Follow it to the right for about a hundred metres until you reach a junction of paths.

(13) Keep left on thePR® marked in yellow. Keep to the right, avoiding the first left turn into an open area. Continue on to join theGRP® Tours dans le Grand Pic Saint-Loup, also known as the Chemin du Vieux Pigeonnier.

(14) Turn right onto it, following the yellow-red markings. You will reach a road and the entrance to the village of Murles.

(15) Leave theGRP® here by turning right onto the D127. Leave this road too after about a hundred metres to turn left onto Rue du Sentier des Capriers. Turn immediately right onto Chemin des Ouillères and continue along the path that follows it. Cross a stream and rejoin theGRP® immediately afterwards. Turn right onto it to reach another crossroads of paths at a place called La Passière.

(16) Leave theGRP® and turn left onto thePR® marked in yellow. Avoid all side paths and head southwards across the summit area of the Travers. Turn right at the fork onto the windingPR®. Continue along the road below on your left, following two hairpin bends, then join the road at a three-way junction.

(17) Turn right at the electricity pylon and follow the yellow markings. Heading north, walk alongside the hamlet of Les Vignes de l’Arnède and reach a crossroads.

(18) Turn left and head uphill on thePR® (yellow markings). At the fork, keep right on thePR® (IGN map is incorrect). Follow a stream and climb up to reach the D127E6 road.

(19) Cross it and take the path leading uphill opposite on thePR® (yellow markings). Pass close to Dolmen A at Mas Reynard. Then reach the hamlet known as Le Closcas, keep right on thePR® and reach a crossroads.

(20) Turn right onto thePR® (yellow markings). Walk past the cistern on your left, avoiding the left-hand exit, then reach a junction. Leave thePR® and turn left downhill heading north-west. Take the DFCI track. Cross the Bois de Nasse, avoiding all exits. You will then reach the initial crossroads you passed on the way out.

Turn left and follow the route taken on the way there to return to the dirt car park (S/E)

There are no water sources along the entire route. For your rucksack, take only the bare essentials. The usual kit for all hikers. Bring a windbreaker. Don’t forget water and snacks. Check the weather forecast before setting off. Walk in good, well-worn shoes. Taking care of your feet is essential; use anti-chafing cream, for example. A cap with a neck flap, mainly in summer.

In hot weather, it is best to set off early in the morning to explore and enjoy nature, especially at dawn.
Much of the route is largely shaded.
A GPX track is required for this hike.

Hike completed in the opposite direction (blocked by hunters...).
PLEASE NOTE: the oppidum is now private property and is no longer accessible in either direction.
This greatly reduces the appeal of the hike (there are other, more enjoyable ways to see the dolmen).
It remains a pleasant and peaceful hike.

A lovely walk with no real difficulty apart from the distance.
21 km in 4 hours 40 minutes without a break, with a total elevation gain of 486 m.
Point of interest: Roc de Pampelune and its oppidum.
Downsides:

  • private land to cross to reach Roc de Pampelune.
  • Parts of the route are on tarmac.

We covered most of this route on Saturday 23 March.
It’s not very interesting, with few views and no heritage sites.
What’s more, the path is difficult, with lots of stones that are very hard on the ankles; you have to watch your step constantly to avoid twisting an ankle
The only attraction of this route is that it is shaded (by numerous holm oaks), which is a boon for walkers in hot weather.

Setting off from Murles, for the sake of the vehicle’s safety, we decided to walk this excellent route in the opposite direction for a change… what always draws us in is the ‘wild’ atmosphere of the heath and the woods. This is the perfect time of year to spot game: pheasants, red-legged partridges, wild boar, birds of prey and all manner of other birds, and so on. And you’re completely on your own! The varied route, which is relatively long and challenging due to the rugged terrain and stony paths, offers some truly beautiful views.
If you’re in good shape, it’s a real treat!

Hello
It’s a bit tricky to find your way at the start, but it’s a lovely walk through the heath with points of interest such as an oppidum and a dolmen.
Thanks, Thierry

: an easy walk, much of which takes place in woods or undergrowth where you can’t see much, if anything. It’s a shame, as otherwise the route would be interesting with more open ground

A monotonous walk with no particular difficulties but lacking in charm... It’s better to go a little further to enjoy places that are far more pleasant...
