The Vallonbrun Refuge via Les Chalets des Fesses and back via the small pass

An easy walk through varied landscapes; it climbs a little at the start.

Description of the walk

Park along the quiet track near the houses in the hamlet of Granges Longues.

(S/E) Follow the signs for the Vallonbrun refuge as indicated on the signpost. Enter the woodland and reach the junction of the footpath and a track.

(1) Take the path opposite (signposted) and rejoin the Grattais forest track, following it to the right. After the hairpin bend, cross a stream and you’ll come to another path junction.

(2) Take this path to the right and begin a winding ascent, ignoring all the paths branching off to the right and left. Reach a gate near an alpine chalet.

(3) Go through the gate and close it behind you, go round the back of the alpine chalet and continue climbing, following the path to the track.

(4) Turn right onto it and follow it to the Refuge du Vallonbrun, situated on theGRP® Tour de la Haute Maurienne.

(5) Continue to the right on theGRP® marked in red and yellow, pass the Chapelle Saint-Antoine and shortly afterwards you will come to another junction.

(6) Turn right and begin the descent towards the hamlet of the small pass, indicated on a sign.
Caution: the descent is sometimes steep and not wooded. You will reach a crossroads at a place called Plan de l'Eau.

(7) Turn left, then left again at the next junction. Continue on to rejoin the GRP® at the Ruisseau des Granges.

(8) Turn right onto it, pass under the chalets and continue downhill to the hamlet of Le Collet.

(9) Cross the hamlet, turning right at the Sainte-Marie-Madeleine chapel. Follow the tarmac track to the junction with the D902. Turn right and walk alongside the D902 behind the crash barrier.

(10) Turn right and follow the tarmac track to the car park in the hamlet of Les Granges Longues (S/E)..

A lovely hike. Stunning scenery across the various mountain ranges. We arrived in a beautiful little valley dotted with alpine pastures. A very pleasant lunch at the mountain hut

We did this hike on a sunny winter's day, which was a real treat.
We also opted for the small path through the woods rather than the forest road.
What splendour and zenitude when we arrived at the refuge (closed, of course), where we enjoyed a snack thanks to a beautiful slate table. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a heavenly spot!
Snowshoes are required for the descent of about 1 km.

Hello, Thank you for this review.
Regarding the route between points 1 and 2, I preferred the gently sloping path – a way of taking it easy.
For the route between 6 and 8, I simply wanted to vary the pleasures by passing through a very quiet area and discovering other panoramas and natural diversity.

A lovely, fairly easy hike. A steady climb under the trees, along a stream, then through mountain pastures.
The Vallonbrun refuge is very nice and the view is beautiful.
The descent is steady but a little steep.

Unfortunately, the pleasure is spoiled by the noise of motorbikes, which echoes halfway up the slope.

It is not clear why the author of the route has us follow the road between points (1) and (2), when there is a well-marked path that climbs straight up. Nor is it clear why there is a detour (6)-(7)-(8) when the GR continues straight ahead.

A lovely walk, except between points 6 and 8: there’s no path, you find yourself in the middle of a field on a slope, with little to see – except, in July, a profusion of flowers!!!
I think it would be better to follow the GR 5 to reach point 8.
On the other hand, there are plenty of marmots around the refuge!!!
