Puig San Marti d’Alcudia

A walk with no major difficulties, apart from the elevation gain. Much of the route is in the shade of a pine forest. This route offers a splendid view of the Alcudia Peninsula in Mallorca.

Description of the walk

Park alongside the Port d’Alcudia go-kart track.

(S/E) Carry on along the wide dirt road and take the first path on your right (signposted ‘Puig de San Marti’ and ‘Cova de San Marti’). You’ll pass through a sort of roundabout. The path naturally curves to the left. Take the first path on the right (same signposts).

(1) You’ll arrive at the Cova de San Marti. This is a chasm to which access is prohibited. Carry on along the track, which very quickly crosses the Ma3470. Be careful – traffic moves fast. Carry on straight ahead (sign for “Cami de San Marti”).

(2) At the three-way junction, ignore the path on the left and carry on, ignoring any paths branching off to the right or left.

(3) You’ll come to a sign for “Cami del Canal Bubot” and turn right.

(4) Just past a house, you’ll come out onto a small tarmac road, which you follow to the right. The road takes a sharp left-hand bend and leads to a dirt-track clearing just before the pass between the two peaks (see alternative route).

(5) Carry on along the road. At the pass, you’ll enjoy your first view of the sea. Continue on to the second peak, which has some antennas on it.

(6) You head back down the small tarmac road.

(5) Carry on along the road.

(4) Take the track on the left.

(3) When you reach the sign for “Cami del Canal Bubot”, instead of turning left, carry on straight ahead. It’s a slightly longer route but it’s all downhill, and it makes for a change of scenery.

(7) At a fork in the road, take the left-hand path.

(2) You’ll rejoin the track you started on; take it to the right. You’ll cross the main road. Pass the “Cova”, then turn left twice to return to your starting point (S/E).

Notes

The route starts at Port d’Alcudia, near the go-kart track, to the west of the large pond. On the wide avenue, Calle de Can Vauma, which runs perpendicular to Avinguda de Pere Mas i Reus. You should park where the tarmac gives way to a dirt track.
Puy San Marti has two summits. The walk takes you to the northern one, which has some aerial masts. This is the lower of the two.

Alternative route: the other summit is higher and more interesting… but much harder to reach. There is no marked path. If you wish to attempt it, at a dirt platform on the right (5), take the path that branches off to the right, heading south-east. This path soon disappears. You’ll need to walk through scrub and rocky terrain, skirting the rocky outcrop to the south.

Worth a visit

A pleasant walk, sheltered by a pine forest, on good paths, with a steady gradient.

Views over the Port of Alcudia and the peninsula.

Visit the town of Alcudia with its ramparts and Roman ruins.
