Le Petit Ballon from Munster

Le Petit Ballon is one of the iconic peaks of the Vosges. This challenging hike takes you up to Le Petit Ballon via its northern slope, specifically from Munster. It is divided into two sections, each 8 km long. The first section involves a climb of over 800 metres in elevation between Munster and the summit, whilst the second section takes you back down. From the top, there is a splendid view of the highest peaks of the Vosges as well as the Munster and Florival valleys. It is also worth noting that the descent is more wooded than the ascent.

Description of the walk

Park at the car park at Munster station.

No signposting

(S/E) From the car park, head to the street opposite the station. Follow this street, Rue Frédéric Hartmann, to the left.

Red Disc signposting

At the junction, head towards the level crossing along Rue du Docteur Heid. Continue to the bridge over the Fecht.

(1) Cross the river and, at the fork, take the Chemin du Leymel opposite. Just after the canal, turn onto the first dirt track on the left. Ignore a track on the left and continue uphill to the junction of the circular route.

(2) Continue along the path which winds up to the left towards the Petit Ballon. Ignore a discreet shortcut on the left and then two others on the right. At the fourth shortcut, go straight ahead. Then pass under a power line and cut across a track to reach the next one.

(3) Head off at an acute angle to the left. Ignore a fork and stay on the track. At the small footbridge on the right, cross it to take the shortcut before coming out onto another track. Follow this one uphill. Ignore a less obvious path coming from the right. Then take a bend and reach a three-way junction.

(4) Continue along the second path on the left, which climbs along the edge of the forest a little further on. It comes out onto a road.

(5) Turn left, then immediately left again at the end of the bend. Continue along this road until the next junction with a path (just before the next road junction).

(6) Turn right onto this path through the sloping woodland. Further up, on Ober Solberg Road, follow it uphill, then take the main path on the left before the houses. Pass the entrance to a private property on the left to take the path on the right and go through a gate at a bend. Continue along the track to the Solberg mast and its viewpoint.

(7) Head right at the junction to take the path opposite the mast. At the edge of the forest, leave the wide path on the right and take the path on the left. Go over a hump and go round another, less prominent, hilltop on the left. The path leads to some houses.

(8) Turn right. Pass a grassy path on the right, then a second one. Do the same with a discreet path that leads into the forest on the right.

No markings

At the next fork, turn right and then right again to see a German observation post dating from the Second World War.

(9) Return to the junction then turn right.

Red Disc Markings

When you rejoin the marked path, turn right. Continue along the track and ignore the one that branches off to the right a little further on. Then ignore a junction on the left to reach another, wider junction.

(10) Take the track on the right.

Yellow Triangle Markings

At the Y-junction, keep left and then go straight on at the two faint paths. You will reach a road.

(11) Cross this road. Go straight on at the first two junctions. At the third, turn right, then left at the fourth. Do the same when you reach the fifth junction. When you cross a grassy track, keep to the right to reach a summit with a viewpoint, a bunker and a bench.

(12) Keep going straight on towards the Petit Ballon, which is in sight. Descend slightly.

Red Disc markings

Head left towards the Buchwald farmhouse inn.

(13) Walk past the farmhouse and turn right twice immediately afterwards, then keep straight ahead at the next junction. Walk past the midway station of the German cable car from the Second World War.

Red Saltire signpost

At the junction with the turnstile, ignore the two paths on the left and head for a track.

(14) Follow this track uphill and take the two hairpin bends to reach a pass.

Yellow Triangle Markings

(15) Head left up towards the Petit Ballon. When you cross a wide path, turn left and then leave it on the right.

No markings

Then head straight on to the junction in the scree of the Petit Ballon.

Yellow Triangle Markings

Turn right towards La Vierge and the summit.

Red Triangle markings

(16) From La Vierge, take the first path on the right, which descends steeply towards the pass. At the junction just before the pass, turn right to reach it.

Blue Disc markings

(17) Cross the track and take the path on the right behind the turnstile. Then follow the road to the crossroads, before turning off to reach the Kahlenwasen farmhouse inn.

(18) Cross the road to take the path leading down opposite. At the junction in the meadows, head down to the right then enter the forest before reaching a track.

(19) Take the first turn right then left to walk alongside the houses in Schweng, which you should leave on your right. Go straight ahead at the next fork and then left at the following fork to reach a road (IGN maps are out of date at this point).

(20) Follow this road down to the houses at Stemlisberg.

Green Saltire

(21) Just before leaving the hamlet, follow the track on the right. After the bend in this track, near a house, take the path on the left. Then first turn left then right to cross a track.

(22) At the next fork, continue down the path opposite and ignore the next path coming from the left. At the next junction, head down to the right towards the Runzbach, which you must cross via a footbridge and a picnic table.

(23) Continue along the path, then, when you cross the track, head straight on along the one running alongside a canal. Follow this straight on until you reach the road.

(24) First turn left then right and, continuing straight on and downhill, return to the junction from the outward journey.

(2) Return to the starting point by following the same route as on the way out (S/E).
