Description of the walk

You can park your vehicle along Rue du Cimetière. Alternatively, there is a car park with more spaces at the junction of Rue du Cimetière and Rue du Ballon.

Your starting point is located at the intersection of Rue de l'Espérance and Rue de Watwiller.

(S/E) Head south on Rue du Cimetière. Walk along the cemetery and then, at the T-junction, turn right onto Rue du Ballon towards the bell tower and arrive at the foot of Saint-Erasme Church.

(1) Turn left onto Rue du Bourg and, after about 100 metres, turn left onto a dirt track to walk alongside the Egelbach stream. At the next crossroads, continue straight ahead towards the Abri-Mémoire. After walking alongside a small park, turn right onto Rue de Soultz, onto Voie Verte 11 towards Cernay, marked with a red rectangle crossed out in white.

(2) Continue straight ahead at the chapel.

(3) At the next roundabout, continue straight ahead towards Thann, then walk past the cemetery and enter Cernay via Faubourg d'Uffholtz. At house number 10, ignore the markings and turn right onto Sentier des Sorcières. Go through a gate. Back on the tarmac road, turn right at the T-junction. At the crossroads with traffic lights, turn right onto Rue Clémenceau, towards the bell tower.

(4) At the Church of Saint-Étienne, turn left onto Rue Raymond Poincarré. Just before crossing the small Thann-Cernay Canal, turn left onto Rue Saint-Odile. Before this street turns left, turn right onto a footpath and cross a small bridge.

(5) Behind the tower, turn right. At the next crossroads, turn left to walk past a war memorial, then continue straight on towards Mulhouse on the D483. Take the Colonel Basset bridge over the Thur.

(6) Just after the bridge, turn right towards Parc à Cigognes. Then immediately right again to take the Voie Verte on the left towards Vieux-Thann. Follow the Thur river, then take the next bridge on the right. After the bridge, continue straight ahead towards Colmar. Turn left after the last building of the Les Tilleuls Primary School, towards Thann, via the D35, in the Faubourg des Vosges. Then turn right into Rue des Montagnes, following the blue cross signposts towards Cernay. Walk along the cemetery and continue straight ahead until the road climbs uphill.

(7) Just after Rue du Schlaegling and before entering a dead-end road, turn right onto the red triangle marked trail. Back in the village, at the three-way junction, continue diagonally to the left onto Rue des Pommiers. Cross the small stream and, at the next crossroads, continue straight ahead along Rue de la Paix. After 100 metres, turn right into Rue de l'Espérance. You will return to your starting point at the end of this street (S/E).

In Rue Saint-Odile, after point number (4), are the remains of the town's fortifications.

After point number (6), along the Thur, there is a stork park with a picnic table.

Opposite the village schools, after crossing the bridge, there is an old chapel with a bell tower and a gate, a remnant of the town's fortifications.
