Car park located at the Col de Saint-Eustache, on either side of the RD420 which links Petreto-Bicchisano to Aullène, near the ‘Chez José’ chalet and refreshment bar.
(S/E) Start of the walk from the RD420: head west along the wide track, leaving the chalet behind you.
When you reach the water tank, leave the descending track and follow the ascending track opposite (signpost visible).
(1) Soon after, at the Fork in the road, take the path that climbs to the right, ignoring the track that branches off to the left (closed off). You will then reach a shaded woodland area and follow a path climbing at a steady, gentle gradient. Yellow markings are present throughout the route.
(2) A path branches off to the left. Ignore it and continue straight on towards the woodland.
(3) At a Y-junction, in a left-hand bend, ignore the path on the right – where a signpost indicates the descent to Petreto – and continue along the track opposite towards the Col de Velica (signposted), leaving the wooded area behind you.
(4) At Col de Velica, ignore the path leading down to the left and continue straight ahead, following the track which now climbs up onto the ridge (signpost to San Petru). If you look back regularly during the ascent (or on the way back), you can see the Aiguilles de Bavella and Mont Incudine. The path climbs gradually in stages until it reaches San Petru, which overlooks the path on the right.
(5) At San Petru, for those who wish, a short, easy climb leads to the summit, offering a panoramic view of the Taravo valley to the north, Propriano Bay to the south-west and Mount Cagna due south.
For the return journey, follow the same route as on the way up.
(4) On the way back, at the Col de Velica, ignore the track branching off to the left (the ascent route) and take the path sloping gently down to the right, starting with a grassy section (signpost – towards Col de Saint Eustache). Follow this route down, which offers fine views of the surrounding mountains.
(6) At the T-junction just after the bend to the right, leave the main track (closed off) which is blocked by tree trunks, turn left and follow the path down through the fir trees until you rejoin the path you took earlier.
(2) Turn right onto the path that descends and leads back to the car park at the start (S/E).
