Description of the walk

Leave your vehicle at the Col de Saint-Eustache car park, on the edge of the D420.

Yellow markings clearly and regularly indicate the route to follow along the entire trail.

(S/E) The trailhead is on the eastern side of the pass (on the left when heading towards Petreto/Aullène). After a stretch through scrubland, the trail climbs gradually between the rocks, heading east then north-east.

(1) Leave the pretty Verruga fountain on your right and continue straight ahead (north).

(2) Below Punta di a Tacculaja, on a right-hand bend, ignore the small path leading off to the left and continue on the main trail that goes around the peak. Reach the ridge and follow it to the left (north-east).

(3) Passing under Poggio Grosso (1386 m), there is a beautiful view to the south over the valley and the villages of Aullène and Zérubia. Continue along the ridge towards the north-east.

(4) The pass at Punta Sambucu is the highest point of the route (1412 m). Continue north, leaving the ridge and passing Punta di i Cavaletti on your right.

(5) Continue north and rejoin the ridge.

(6) Begin the long, gradual descent towards Col de la Vaccia (north-east). Near the pass, find a perpendicular path.
Or, to avoid having to climb back up this final descent, do not descend to the pass but turn back.

(7) Turn back at the pass and climb back up towards the ridge (south-west).

(6) Leave the trail that branches off to the right and continue straight ahead to pass under Punta di i Cavalletti.

(5). Continue south-west and pass Punta Sambucu again, Poggio Grosso, and under Punta di a Tacculaja.

(2) Continue southwest, pass the Verruga fountain and return to the Col de Saint-Eustache (S/E).

One of the most beautiful hikes in the area, with asphodels along the entire route. Trees have begun to grow back since the fire, so there are some shaded areas. We did not complete the entire route to the Vaccia Pass due to its length.

A very beautiful hike with magnificent views of the surrounding mountains, well marked but...
Difficult and tough (actual elevation gain of over 800 m, rocky terrain, more than 18 km).
Walking poles are highly recommended, as are high-top shoes with rigid soles.
GPX track is accurate.

We used the trail to do a different hike, starting from the Col de la Vaccia to reach Punta di i Cavalletti.
Duration: 2 hours 15 minutes round trip
300 m elevation gain
Easy and well marked except for the climb to the summit.
At the pass at around 1,350 m, leave the trail and climb towards the summit, following the ridge more or less via small paths.
There is an orientation table at the summit and a magnificent 360° view of southern Corsica.
For those looking for accommodation nearby, I recommend the Auberge du Col de la Vaccia, which offers a warm welcome, superb views, refurbished rooms and excellent food made with local produce.

A very beautiful hike.
The difficulty lies in the round trip: it's a bit tiring, especially at the end of the route.
Suggestion: start from the Col de la Vacca and turn back just before starting the descent to the Col de St Eustache.
This part is difficult and not very interesting. We save a good hour and can linger on the ridges, which are magnificent!

A pleasant hike with no particular difficulties (the "difficult" rating given in the guidebook is not necessarily justified; the hike is mainly long!). Accessible to all without any problems.
During the first part of the hike, you are supposed to cross a forest: this is no longer the case today, following a forest fire! This part is therefore done in full sun, like almost the rest of the hike.
The end of the hike is a short descent to the Col de la Vaccia, which is of no interest (the Col de la Vaccia is simply a car park...), so it is better to stop at the pass just before (at the information board).
