La Punta di a Junca via Monte San Petru

At the gateway to Alta Rocca, this moderately difficult hike allows you to enjoy the exquisite scents of the maquis in spring. The route stretches along the ridge, offering views of both the Taravo and Rizzanèze valleys. After San Petru, there is a magnificent viewpoint from an orientation table. You can continue on to the memorial stone commemorating the 1981 plane crash. The return and descent are opposite the Aiguilles de Bavella and Incudine.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park at Col de Saint-Eustache, on either side of the RD420, near the "Chez José" chalet and refreshment bar.

(S/E) Head west on the wide track, leaving the chalet behind you, and start the climb opposite. You will soon reach a fork.

(1) Take the track that climbs to the right, ignoring the one that goes to the left (closed). The slope rises quickly to the Col de Velica. There are yellow markings all along the route.

(2) When the climb levels off, in a left-hand bend, turn left onto the small path climbing through the fir trees.

(3) At the end of the small path, return to the wide track. Turn right onto the path going uphill, ignoring the one going downhill on the left (obstructed/closed).

(4) At the pass, ignore the path leading off to the right and continue left onto the trail that now climbs up the ridge (signpost for San Petru). Looking back regularly during the climb, you can see the Aiguilles de Bavella, Mont Incudine, etc. The trail climbs gradually in stages until it reaches San Petru, which overlooks the path on the right.

(5) Accessible after a short, easy climb over the rocks. Beautiful panoramic view from the summit.
After Monte San Petru, continue west on the well-marked trail to reach elevation 1389 (marked by an antenna), which overlooks Punta di a Junca below. An orientation table set back slightly from the path provides commentary on the magnificent panoramic view of the Gulf of Valinco (Propriano), Mount Cagna, and Sardinia on a clear day...

(6) Return to the trail (note: there are no longer any markings, only cairns) and descend between the rocks, following the cairns to reach the memorial to the plane crash of 1 December 1981.

(7) To return, follow exactly the same route as on the way up to reach the Col de Saint Eustache. The descent is towards the Aiguilles de Bavella and Mont Incudine to the east.

Return to the Col de Saint-Eustache car park (S/E).

Worth a visit

From the start and during the climb, then at the memorial (a replica of the church of Bicchisano), small red metal signs provide directions, locations and information, on the initiative of Mr Marc Tafanelli, from the village of Petreto-Bicchisano, who is very attached to the area.

(5) At Monte San Petru, access to the summit is possible after a short and easy climb over the last rocks. Beautiful panoramic view of the Taravo valley, the Gulf of Ajaccio in the distance, and the bay of Propriano to the south.

(7) On 1 December 1981, at Punta da i Junca, a DC9 aeroplane struck the rocks of the mountain and crashed into the gorge below, on the Taravo valley side above the village of Petreto-Bicchisano, killing 180 people. In addition to the memorial erected by the authorities, Marc Tafanelli built a replica of the church in Bicchisano (installed at the end of 2015), which served as a funeral parlour after the accident. Inside a chest are documents recounting the circumstances of the accident and a guest book for those who wish to leave a message.

Stunning! The view of the mountains and the sea, the Bavella peaks, the granite rocks... simply sublime. On the way down, at the Velica pass, we took the path on the left. The path is shaded and runs through a beautiful forest.

After three weeks of hiking in Corsica, we are still dazzled by the panoramic views of this short hike, which is easy on the feet.
The only real alpine hike we encountered here, we did the circular in the other direction.
The explanations about the plane crash that took place in 1981 are moving.
To round off the day, we headed back up the Col de Vacca trail to the ridge to enjoy the colours of the late afternoon.
How peaceful!

A very interesting route to do. Very open. We did a circular around a shaded spring on the way back. Then a second circular under the trees, which was more shaded than the original route. 420m of elevation gain with some steep slopes and often in the sun. Not really recommended with very young children. Several beautiful views at the summit.

Magnificent view of the Bavella peaks, 360° panoramic view of the summits, the Gulf of Ajaccio and, on the other side, the Gulf of Propriano. Very moving to arrive at the site of the 1981 plane crash.
