Description of the walk

From Le Châtelard, head towards École and immediately turn left onto the small road called Les Garins, which you follow up to the hamlet of Chez Garins, where there is a car park at the crossroads.
(S/E) From the car park, return to the houses and head north on the Mont road until you reach the first crossroads (sign).

continue straight ahead along the forest track. When it climbs to the right, continue straight ahead to the stream des Granges area, then climb a few hairpin bends on the right at Chez Berge.

(2) 100 m after the4th bend, climb straight up the slope on the right along an old marked forest track which joins the track you left earlier: take it to the right until you reach the junction with the first forest track coming from the right. Turn left and continue gently uphill to the Col du Plane.

(3) Take the forest road on the right, which descends slightly to the car park on the road from Mont Devant (altitude 1335 m).

(4) Bear right onto the well-marked path that runs along the western flank of the ridge at Bois d'Enfer. It climbs slightly and eventually joins the ridge as it descends.

(5) Turn sharply right to take the ridge, which is steep at first; a few turns to the right allow you to climb up the muddiest part.

Gradually, the slope becomes gentler. Leave the path descending to Goulet de Doucy on the left and climb the ridge path to the Sept 2000 viewpoint.

(6) What follows is a series of small descents and ascents, becoming increasingly rocky until you reach the secondary summit (1662 metres).

(7) From the secondary summit to the main summit, the path passes through the rocks and crosses a breach before climbing again. Two passages are equipped with fixed knotted ropes to make them easier to cross.

(8) From the summit (cross), continue along the rocky ridge which descends into the forest. The path then becomes less steep, gradually passing along the right side of the ridge, then turning more sharply to the right to descend a forest track to a storage area at the end of a forest road.

(9) Take the path opposite, heading due west and descending straight down the slope along a ravine

(10) Cross another forest road to reach a fence opening onto a meadow where the trail descends to near the Refuge des Garins.
The access road to the farm leads back to the Garins crossroads.

(1) This will take you back to the starting point (S/E).

Practical information

This circular would normally be rated "Moderate": only the two sections equipped with fixed ropes between (7) and (8) make it difficult.

Markings exist throughout:
- From the start to the descent to Goulet de Doucy (after (5)):GR®® 96 red and white plus a few yellow markings.
- from this point to the summit: yellow plaques on a green background, relatively spaced out
- from the summit to the finish point: large yellow paint marks.

In the nearby area

The stream des Granges basin has experienced major landslides followed by significant mountain terrain restoration work (RTM). The start of the circular route described crosses these. For more information, see the description of the GEO-RANDO des Maîtres du Mont Déserté on the Regional Park website, with an interpretation booklet available from the Châtelard Tourist Office.

The view from the ridge and summit stretches across the main peaks of Les Bauges (hence the name of the viewpoint, "des Sept 2000"), with a bird's eye view of the Chéran valley, the Tours Saint-Jacques and even Lake Annecy in the distance.
Unfortunately, the photos illustrating the guidebook were taken on an autumn day when the mountain was shrouded in cloud.

Always stay careful and alert while following a route. Visorando and the author of this walk cannot be held responsible in the event of an accident during this route.

Beautiful route, easy first part on a shaded forest track, from 5 onwards it becomes more challenging but enjoyable with
markings, as already mentioned, not recommended in wet weather or for people who are prone to vertigo. The most difficult section below the summit is equipped with cables. Beautiful view at the summit and well-marked descent as it is the classic route.
A beautiful hike, thank you.

As we are a group of people who hike regularly, we needed to exceed 1,000 metres of elevation gain, so we set off from Les Granges. We then passed through the Mennauds gorge to complete the circular route from Garins (route suggested by JC).
A very beautiful circular under a slightly overcast sky. Lunch break at the 7 Deux Mille viewpoint. Superb panorama.
On the ridge, you have to stay alert.
Not recommended in wet weather.
Thank you again for introducing us to this beautiful crossing.

Very beautiful day hike
Mountain passes where you need to be careful and not be afraid of heights. Ropes in good condition for rock climbing sections
Very beautiful views
The trail is not easy to find in the snow and requires numerous backtracking
For the fit and fitte!

A superb hike, partly along a somewhat wild ridge trail. It goes up and down and there are quite a few elevation changes. There are two small sections that are a little tricky but well equipped with cables. Do not go with people who are afraid of heights and make sure you have good footwear. In some areas, the trail is not very well marked but it is still fairly easy to find.
Superb landscapes over the Bauges massif.

The first part is well shaded in the morning, which is pleasant in this heat. On the climb between 2 and 3, I was lucky enough to encounter a deer (which I hope escaped the hunter stationed between 1 and 2...). There are no particular difficulties on the route, except for a section after the viewpoint where it's unclear whether to climb over the slab or underneath it, so you lose the path a little. The section with the handrail (cable reinforced with a rope) isn't vertiginous; you have to climb, of course, but there's no fear of heights at this point. A beautiful hike, well worth doing.

The circular should be done clockwise as indicated in the suggested itinerary. Follow the signs carefully. On the ridge, the ropes were replaced with cables in June 2023. In the first half, the descent into the rocks is quite steep and difficult.
An interesting, varied walk with beautiful views towards the summit. There is a very beautiful cross at the summit.

It's a long hike, but it's worth it because the view once you reach the ridge is fantastic, especially at the Sept 2000 viewpoint. The short descent before the summit adds a little spice, but it's a shame that the equipment has been removed.
Please note that the normal route to the Col de Plane has been diverted due to a rockfall, but if you follow the trail, the route is not affected (you pass by it)

A beautiful hike that is fairly easy to follow. One major drawback: the ropes have disappeared, making the difficult sections quite tricky without ropes. According to locals, this is a very recent development!
It is therefore essential to bring a rope of about 15 metres to be on the safe side.

Thank you for this well-marked trail. However, due to landslides, the detour signposted took me completely off the trail, and when you don't know the area, I am grateful for the GPX track (the network doesn't always work) and the forest maintenance crew! I took the path in the opposite direction.
When you reach the ridge, take the time to stop at the 7 Deux Mille viewpoint (= 7 peaks at 2,000 m) because the view is magnificent when it's clear.
The cross is superb and also offers a fantastic panorama.
There is a section that requires climbing with ropes. Therefore, avoid doing the route in rainy weather or if it has rained, as it is slippery.
And at the end of the route, don't hesitate to stop at the Refuge des Garins to enjoy a homemade snack, a good meal and/or a refreshing drink, with the added bonus of a magnificent view of the Pic du Colombier!

Today's hike with a 15-year-old teenager and a 9-year-old little walker, all in 5 hours and 40 minutes. The hike is very good, it's varied, starting with a track to warm up, then a balcony path and finally the ridge, easy up to the secondary summit. Then it gets trickier, with some serious scrambling, but it's fine, especially in the two rope passages. Our little guy followed the instructions well and everything went smoothly. He's calm and obedient, so the aerial passages on the ridge were no problem.
After the long ridge section, the descent through the woods gives your thighs a rest and it ends peacefully with cows for the last few metres.
Thank you for this hike, everyone really enjoyed it

Hike completed on 29/03. There was still a lot of snow up to the summit at least, which made things a little more difficult. Between (3) and (7). A total of 8 hours of hiking.
The descent from the summit is better exposed, so there is less snow.
Between (1) and (3), observe the slope drainage system, the measuring and inspection devices; the mountain is still moving... The Path of the Masters of Ancient Times has been closed since mid-March 2021; this does not affect this hike, which is further upstream, even though some sections are shared.

Taken today, this is a beautiful hike offering stunning views of the Bauges mountains: Roc des Boeufs, Roc du Four Magnin, Trelod, Colombier... I loved the section starting from Belvédère des 7 2000, which is rockier and more scenic. Thank you for this route.
