Mont-Clergeon and Grande Cuve

Mont Clergeon, with its summit at over 1,000 metres, is not one of the most popular peaks in Savoie. However, it offers a 360° view of the Rhône valley and the Bauges, Aravis and Mont Blanc mountains. The route is mostly shaded.

Description of the walk

From Rumilly, head towards Col du Clergeon, through the village of Moye. After Col du Clergeon, descend towards Ruffieux and stop at the Grange Neuve car park on the D55 (information sign).

(S/E) With your back to the car park, turn right and follow the road for about 300 m. Leave the return path signposted Rojux on your right. Continue for a few dozen metres until you find the start of a path.

(1) Turn left, heading south, onto this path which crosses fields. There are yellow arrows on a green background to guide you. The path reaches a left-hand bend and becomes more visible. At Les Granges, you will reach the temporary stream of the Vinan.

(2) The climb that follows is fairly steep but shaded. Follow the bank of the stream until it disappears into a small marsh.

(3) Immediately after, turn left and join the crossroads with the Clergeon road, marked by a wayside shrine.

(4) Cross the road, with the oratory on your right, and take the Chemin du Mont opposite towards Mont Clergeon. Take a look at the information board to understand how these houses were built. Pass through the hamlet of Montclergeon and you will come to a crossroads in the next hamlet.

(5) Turn right and continue to Mont Clergeon, where an imposing cross dominates the summit. The view here is superb, towards the Haute-Savoie and Savoie mountains.

(6) Enjoy the view, then return to the previous crossroads.

(5) Turn right towards the "Grande Cuve" along the path known as the Montagne Ruffieux. It follows the border between Savoie and Haute Savoie. After more than 1.5 km, stop to read the sign explaining the charcoal kiln.

(7) Continue on your left for about 100 metres until you reach a crossroads.

(8) Turn right towards the "Grande Cuve" where, once again, geological explanations help you understand the name given to the "Grande Cuve". The ONF has built an observation tower here, offering a panoramic view of the Clergeon mountain and the entire massif.

(9) Then retrace your steps back to the previous crossroads.

(8) Keep to the right, towards the hamlet of Rojux. The path turns south and joins an intersection.

(10) Leave the path to your left that leads east towards Mont Clergeon and continue right towards Rojux. After about 100 metres, at the crossroads, turn left, heading south, until you reach the hamlet of Rejux, at a crossroads.

(11) Take the path on the right to go around the hamlet to the south and enjoy the houses in this pretty hamlet, as well as the bread oven. The path turns north and comes to a crossroads. Turn left until the next crossroads.

(12) Continue downhill, heading south-west, towards a stream that is often dry.

(13) Shortly after the stream, turn left, rejoin the road and the outward route.

(1) Head back up to the left towards the Col du Clergeon to return to the car park (S/E).

A very attractive and varied route with various points of interest: a large tank, an observation tower, a cross at the summit, and the hamlet of Rojux.
The climb up the stream is difficult (steep and muddy) in the days following heavy rain.

Good route, very well signposted and beautiful views
At the start, you need to turn right into a field before the signpost. You will need to open the gate to enter the field.
