Lakes Miroir and Sainte-Anne and the Charanchettes viewpoint in Ceillac

A circular route that takes in the valley’s most beautiful spots whilst avoiding the ski resort facilities.
Most of the hike is through woodland and the route follows theGR® trails, so the gradients are gentle and the paths are in good condition; moreover, the signposting in the Queyras is excellent.

Description of the walk

Park at the Ceillac ski resort car park.

(S/E) Cross the bridge over the Mezelet. Take theGR®5opposite, marked in white and red, start the climb and reach the wooden footbridge securing the crossing.

(1) Continue on, passing a few hairpin bends and then an easier path, until you reach the footbridge spanning the Ruisseau de la Pisse.

(2) Cross the stream and you will easily reach Lac Miroir. Walk along its right bank and you will find a crossroads of paths at its southern tip.

(3) Leave theGR® on your left and take the balcony path on your right. Join theGR® again at the Sainte-Anne ski lift.

(4) Carry on along it and continue the climb to reach Lac Sainte-Anne. Walk past the chapel to reach a crossroads of paths.

(5) Leave theGR® here and take the yellow-marked path on the left. Follow the ski run until you reach a crossroads.

(6) Turn right onto the balcony path, reach the Torrent du Col Tronchet and cross it to quickly rejoin the Col du Tronchet path.

(7) Turn left onto it and continue the descent until you reach the Chaurionde car park and its facilities.

(8) Cross the stream via the footbridge and continue along the left bank through the forest, keeping your distance from the stream. When you reach a junction, turn right to cross the stream with care, as whilst crossing the stream was straightforward in August, it may not always be easy. Join the forest road, follow it to the left for a few metres and reach a Y-junction.

(9) Leave the road and turn right onto the forest track, pass through a gate and continue along this gently ascending track through the woods. You will reach a path junction with a sign.

(10) Take this path to the left and, after a few hairpin bends, reach the hamlet of Le Pied du Mélézet and then the car park at Ceillac station (S/E).

Great hike. Done during the summer, when it's busier. However, in autumn, it's much quieter!

A lovely walk with stunning scenery at the end, with lakes and the mountains surrounding them. A walk not to be missed if you’re in the area. The path follows the stream all the way up – a truly beautiful spot. The climb is a bit steep along the path, but you can take the less steep forest track on the way back. We didn’t choose that option; we preferred to do the climb via the path and a gentler descent. We did the hike in autumn and there’s a section on a small bridge on the way up that crosses the stream in a clearing – a scene straight out of Canada with the leaves turning yellow at that time of year. Lake Miroir certainly lives up to its name.

A lovely hike to do in late summer, with just a few people at Lac Miroir and a larger group at Lac Sainte-Anne.

The first part of the route is challenging due to a long, steep climb. The lakes are magnificent.
We missed the path between the two lakes and followed the GR, and we really regretted it...
We do not recommend taking the final section, which avoids the return track but involves a tiring, uninteresting climb and a steep descent along a very narrow path.
