Lac d'Antre, its disappearance and the resurgence of the Héria

Around Lac d'Antre, its sinkhole and the resurgence of the Héria, one of the most important sanctuaries in Gaul was established between the 1st and 3rd centuries AD.
It is through the cult of water that I invite you to discover the ancient city of Antre, its Gallo-Roman remains, its resurgences and its cliff perched 962 m above the lake,

Please note: due to bad weather and tree-felling work around Lake Antre, access around the lake and to the Belvédère is prohibited. When facing Lake Antre, you must head for points (3) and (6) and avoid points (1), (2), (4) and (5).

Description of the walk

To get to the start, head towards Villards d’Héria. From the town hall, a sign points you towards Lac d’Antre, located about 3 km away. Park your car on the left before the lake, opposite the Lac d’Antre Friends’ pavilion.

(S/E) To start the walk, head towards the right bank of the lake, passing to the right of the small building. Follow the bank to the small reservoir at the far end of the lake.

(1) Lac d'Antre outflow: cross the small reservoir, noting the resurgence on your right through which the water rushes. Continue along the lake on the path through the woods, which is more or less marked, to reach the farm visible on the eastern shore.

(2) Grange du Lac d'Antre: it was here, on the site of the farm, at the foot of the cliff face and on the lake’s edge, that temples dedicated to Mars and Bellona, the Roman gods of war and water, were erected.
Continue along the lake on the Grange du Lac d'Antre forest road. At the left-hand bend, leave the forest road and take the path heading north, then continue straight on along the Roche d'Antre forest road.

(3) At the highest point of the forest road, take the hairpin bend southwards towards the viewpoint. After a steep, stony climb, follow the forest path heading south-west and continue straight on, ignoring the marked paths branching off to the left.

(4) Roche d'Antre: view of Lac d'Antre, the viaduct and, on a clear day, the Jura Mountains and Mont Blanc.
Continue north-north-east along the path that runs alongside the cliff for about 200 m, then turn north onto the wider path which descends steeply. At the first junction, take the path branching off to the right, turn north-east into the woods and stay on this path for about 1.2 km.

(5) Turn left, heading west, and continue to the Roche d’Antre forest road. Cross it and continue along theGR®9for about 150 metres. Then leave theGR®9, which branches off to the left, and continue straight ahead due north.

(6) At the bottom of the descent, at the junction, head west-south-west along the path branching off to the left, then turn right at the first junction. You will then pass a pretty row of limestone slabs. If you climb onto these slabs, you will be able to see ‘lésines’ – grooves carved out by runoff and covered in lichen.
Continue on your way and, 50 metres before the forest road, turn off onto the small path on the left signposted “Puits Noir”.

(7) Le Puits Noir: once you reach thisfirst resurgence, continue along the path to the Y-junction and follow the path branching off to the right, which joins the forest road and leads to the “Puits Blanc”. After the Puits Blanc, continue along the forest road heading south-west, pass a house and head towards the Gallo-Roman excavations.

(8) Pont des Arches: at the Gallo-Roman excavations, walk along the fence to catch a glimpse of the site and the Pont des Arches, then retrace your steps to rejoin the forest road and continue along it for about 400 m towards the village of Villards d’Héria.

At the junction by the first houses, turn left into Rue du Moulin, cross the bridge over the Héria and continue south-west along the Route du Lac d’Antre until you see the bridge.

(9) 30 m before the junction, take the small path branching off to the right to pass under the arches of the bridge. At the bottom of this path, turn 90° to your left towards the south. Cross the bridge over the tram line and stay on this path until you reach the junction with the Lac d’Antre forest road.

Continue south for 100 m and take the path on the left, then immediately turn onto the path on the right to reach the starting car park (S/E).

Hello,
That’s right, the original route to Lac d’Antre has been significantly altered, losing a third of its appeal. A section of the mountainside has collapsed into the lake. The path used to run along the foot and the summit, which has partly disappeared,
Further forestry work, which has nothing to do with the bad weather, has also severely damaged the path through the woods, leaving ruts and dead branches on the route, which shows that modern loggers do not respect the forest. It’s rather a rite of passage...
However, walkers should not be discouraged from visiting the Heria resurgence, an imposing Roman site dedicated to water, which is worth the trip in its own right.

A section of the cliff facing the lake collapsed following this winter’s heavy rains, and the part of the lakeside trail at the start has been inaccessible since February 2024, as has access to the viewpoint above.
Subsequently, logging and skidding machinery has used the rest of the path, creating ruts up to 40–50 cm deep in places, filled with water, and branches litter the path all along, as the machinery does not clear the area behind it.
However, the black well is worth a detour, even if it is not very easy to find, and the Gallo-Roman site at Villards d’Héria is worth the trip in its own right. Excavations are currently underway and the site is open to visitors in summer. Please register on the website to arrange a visit.

For me, it’s an old favourite!: I’ve done it several times, including a descent from the top of La Roche via a scree slope – a very tricky one, though. Worth noting on this descent is a small hollow where you can find shell fossils. So this area was under the sea in ancient times!
But it’s true that for those doing it for the first time, it can be quite a struggle.
A good 1:10,000 map and/or a hiking GPS can prove useful.

Hello,
We went on the hike on 6 July 2023; the grass was tall, making it difficult to see the paths.
Then the forest paths were impassable, with tree trunks, branches and foliage all over the paths; we got a bit lost, but luckily we had the GPS (5 hours of hiking instead of 3½ hours).
The signposting isn’t always clear, and particularly at the start, it should be made clear that at Lac d’Antre you need to walk past the house, head down towards the lake and cross a small footbridge.
In our opinion, the route could have started from Bourg de Villards d’Heria to avoid the climb from Lac d’Antre at the end. It’s a shame the archaeological site is only open on Thursdays in August.

Hello,
Thank you for sharing this lovely walk.
Very shaded, so perfect for hot weather.
There are some lovely views, but it can be a bit tricky to find your way without the Visorando app.
But it will remain a fond memory.

Whilst I wasn’t disappointed, I wasn’t exactly thrilled by this hike.
Most of the route is in the shade. There are numerous paths through the forest; a GPS is essential as there are no signposts and there’s a high risk of getting lost.
The viewpoint, which you reach quickly, offers a stunning view of the lake and the Jura mountains, but it’s really the only viewpoint along the entire hike, which I found rather monotonous.
Best done in warm weather as it’s mainly through the woods, which completely block out the sun.

A lovely walk, but the logging tracks between points 4 and 7 mean you need to use the GPX tracks. With a paper map, it’s hard to find your way; there are lots of paths, few of which are marked, and some are completely rutted. It’s easy to end up walking a few hundred metres further than intended. As for the white well, thanks to the previous comments which helped me discover it. Indeed, you mustn’t miss the little path.

The route is unmarked apart from a few short sections of the GR trail; make sure you follow the signposts between 4 and 6 (the wooded area) as there are numerous paths – a compass is essential (I don’t use a GPS). Note that the distance figures given are a bit generous (100 m instead of 200 m, for example). A lovely route with a stunning view of the Jura Mountains.

Circular walk extended to the Scia viewpoint, Camilla,...
Thanks to you, we walked along the wild stretch of Lake Antre. We hesitated briefly, but you really do need to walk all the way past the building and then head downhill
To get to points 6 and 7, I followed the GPX track.
It’s worth popping round to see the two wells. You’ll find the white well after walking a short way along the road: a short round trip along a narrow path (keep an eye out for it)
Thanks!!!
