(S/E) Set off along the little Rue Saint-Nicolas, which runs alongside the town hall. Cross the Furieuse via a small bridge and, at the fountain, continue to the left, passing behind the saltworks (chimneys). Then climb up a lovely sunken path which, higher up, becomes a stony track and then a tarmac road.
(1) At the crossroads in the hamlet of Côte Saint-André, head up to the right along the quiet tarmac road which will take you to the fort. For those who aren’t keen on tarmac, look up and admire the view over the beautiful Salins valley, dominated by Fort Belin. Further up, as you enter the woods, you’ll come across a stony path on your right (marked with a ‘Belvédère’ signpost), which you should leave behind to reach the Acrobatic Park.
(2) Turn right, towards the far end of the gravel car park, to discover a viewpoint overlooking Salins. Retrace your steps and continue uphill to the nearby picnic tables. Carry on along the road to the right towards the fort’s entrance for another viewpoint looking north.
(3) At the corner of a wall, to the left of the viewpoint, head down the path towards Salins. Watch out for stinging nettles on the first few metres. A little further down, you’ll join a path coming from the left. Carry straight on down this path, which turns into a lovely sunken track running alongside an old, moss-covered wall.
(4) At the road, head down to the right and cross the Furieuse. Follow it to the right and pass under the arcades of the beautiful town hall to return to the car park (S/E).
