Parking in Pretin, in front of the church.
Yellow and red markings
(S/E) Take about twenty steps to the left (facing the church) and go up Rue du Château on the right. Turn right again at the first fork, walk past a beautiful old house and you will come to a lovely path that climbs steeply up to the meadows (signpost). Turn left and walk along the edge of the field to the superb viewpoint over the Val de Pretin.
(1) Return to the signpost and turn left, following the path through the grass and walking along the edge of the forest for about 50 metres. Note the signs on the left inviting you to enter the woods for a glimpse of the monastery ruins (pile of stones) and a chapel. Turn back and continue to the corner (right) of the edge of the forest.
(2) Leave the first path on your left and take the one that is right on the corner and branches off immediately. Turn right towards Fort Saint-André along a stony path, which is hard on the ankles, to reach an open space, the Allumelles jumping area. It offers a 180° view of the Marnoz valley and the imposing silhouette of Mont Poupet.
(3) Leave the viewpoint via the opposite corner to where you arrived, where you will find a signpost and a fork in the path. Continue straight ahead along the ridge to finally reach the end of the valley and enjoy more beautiful views of Poupet, Fort Saint-André and the Monts de Cernans. Join a small gravel road and walk up to the right for about thirty steps.
(4) Then go up to the left along the stony path towards the fort. After a hairpin bend, you will reach a wider farm track which you take on the left, soon coming out onto a tarmac road opposite the tree-top adventure park (picnic tables).
(5) Go down to the right for about 100 metres, then follow the park fence on the left, passing curious llamas, and continue along the grassy path to the beautiful viewpoint over Salins, dominated by Fort Belin. Return to the road and continue downhill for another 200 metres.
(6) Descend to the left along the wide forest path towards Bracon. When it turns right towards the meadow, continue along the path descending to the left, which will offer you more views of Salins and the Monts de Cernans. As you approach the first houses of Salins, you will reach a descending path.
(7) Then climb back up to the left for a steep climb to the entrance to Fort Saint-André. Another viewpoint over the valley.
(8) Descend along the road that passes through the old ditches to reach the crossroads opposite the tree-top adventure park.
(5) Turn back, remembering to descend to the right at the red pole marking a high-voltage power line.
(4) Descend to the left to the oratory and the departmental road via the small tarmac road, which offers beautiful views of the Pretin valley and its cliffs.
(9) Head back up to the right to return to Saint-Étienne Church (S/E).
The route includes cliff-top paths and unsecured viewpoints. The paths are rocky and slippery in places. Sturdy footwear is essential and walking sticks are recommended.
