The Drumont circular route from Fellering via the Haselkopf and the Gustiberg

Starting from Fellering, the hike takes you through a pleasant forest climb to Langmatt, where you join the ridge path near the Haselkopf, before reaching the Drumont, and returning via the Gustiberg and the Fellering peat bog. From the unobstructed summit of the Drumont, there is a magnificent view over the Thur valley and the surrounding Vosges peaks.

Description of the walk

Parking is available in the car park before or after the church along the Grande Rue in Fellering.

(S/E) Walk up the Grande Rue to the next junction with the Rue des Écoles on the left.

Markings: Yellow Disc

(1) Walk up Rue des Écoles, following the Yellow Disc markings, to the next junction.

(2) Turn right, and continue straight on at the next junction, along Rue du Moulin. Cross the bridge over the Thur and turn right at thesecond junction (Yellow Disc signposting).

(3) Turn right onto Chemin de Rammersbach and follow it up to the next junction (Yellow Disc signposting).

(4) Leave the Chemin d’Oderen on your right and continue left along the Chemin de Rammersbach, keeping to the uphill path until the track turns left.

Red Triangle signposting

(5) Leave the Yellow Disc signposting and take the road on the right, following the Red Triangle signposting. Follow the Red Triangle signposting to the junction with the GR® 551 near Haselkopf.
At the junction, turn left until you reach thefirst left-hand bend uphill.

(6) At this bend, leave this road and follow the path winding uphill to the right until you reach the junction with the Chemin d’Alscher, ignoring the Red Disc path which joins from the right.

(7) Follow the Chemin d’Alscher uphill to the right for just under 100 metres, then take the path leading uphill to the left. Follow it to the junction with a tarmac road, which you should follow to the right for about 200 metres (it leads to the Bergenbach farmhouse inn). Then take the path marked with a Red Triangle/Red Disc on the left.

(8) When the path reaches a flat section as it approaches the forest, take the second forest track (marked with a Red Triangle) on the left, below the Langenbach shelter, and follow it for about 200 m. Continue climbing to the right, still following the Red Triangle markings. At the first bend in the forest track where it turns right, carry on straight ahead along a mountain-side path that winds its way up to the junction with theGR®531.

Blue Rectangle markings
.
(9) Continue to the left along theGR®, climbing to the Drumont orientation table, and ignoring the path that descends to the right towards the Drumont farmhouse inn.

(10) Drumont summit (1,200 m, orientation table). Descend on the other side of the summit to the junction of paths below the paragliding take-off area.

Blue Triangle signposting

(11) Leave theGR® which branches off to the right, and head straight down (Blue Triangle) across the scree, then through the forest, and finally across the scree overlooking the Gustiberg farmhouse inn at a crossroads.

Red Disc Markings

(12) Continue straight on, following the change in markings (Red Disc), to reach Gustiberg after two large hairpin bends followed by a small tarmac road that runs alongside the farmhouse inn. Follow this road to the next hairpin bend.

(13) Follow the path on the right (Red Disc markings), just outside the hairpin bend on the main road, which descends through the forest to the next junction of marked paths, below the Paradis Hisel shelter (altitude 809). Continue along the same path to the next junction of marked paths.

Blue Triangle markings

(14) Follow the path on the left (marked with a Blue Triangle) which winds down to join a forest track.

(15) Cut across the forest track to follow the path below (marked with a Blue Triangle) and take care not to stray onto the various unmarked paths that lead onto the marked path. After two hairpin bends, rejoin the tarmac road that runs alongside the peat bog, then pass under the old railway bridge and take the first street (Rue du See) on the left after the bridge. Follow this street for about 500 m.

(16) At the junction, turn right onto the path (Blue Triangle) and then follow the street that follows it until the next junction. Pass the bridge over the Seebach on your right and turn left onto Rue de la Thur. Follow this street until, after the bridge over the Thur, you reach Rue des Ecoles and, 100 m further on, the junction you passed on the way out.

(2) Leave the signposted route, turn right, then cross the Grande Rue to return to the starting car park (S/E).

Notes

The summit of the Drumont is a well-known paragliding launch site, just like the summit opposite the Trehkopf.

Along the route, there are two shelters: the Langenbach shelter, roughly halfway up the climb, and the magnificent Paradis Hisel shelter to the south-east of the Gustiberg, which is not marked on the IGN map. It is situated at a junction of signposted trails at an altitude of 809 metres.

Always be cautious and plan ahead when you're outdoors. Visorando and the author of this route cannot be held responsible for any accidents occurring on this route.

We thoroughly enjoyed this hike. The route is beautiful, with many different viewpoints. The signage is sometimes hidden, and without the Visorando app, I think we would have got lost.

The Club Vosgien’s signposting is sometimes only clear to those in the know…

A long hike of over 15 km. As the descriptions are often ambiguous, it’s best to rely on the map.
We came across very few people, except near the Drumont. Dozens of paragliders were in the air.
It’s worth noting that the name ‘Ferme-Auberge du Bergenbach’ is misleading, as in fact the only accommodation on offer is a lodge with no catering facilities for passing walkers.
However, we do recommend the blueberry tart at the Drumont farmhouse inn.
A superb hike in the sunshine.
