The Cirque de Consolation from the Roche du Prêtre

Among the must-see spots in Franche-Comté are the Saut du Doubs, as well as the Cirque de Consolation, a few dozen kilometres away. Numerous waterfalls flow into this funnel-shaped valley, at the bottom of which stands a church. Various hiking trails are also available. This hike allows you to walk around the entire area via a ridge path not shown on IGN maps, discovering all the secrets of the cirque along the way.

Description of the walk

The route starts at the car park at the Roche du Prêtre viewpoint.

(S/E) From the car park, take the inconspicuous path that branches off to the right, running alongside the fence and skirting the drop. There are numerous panoramic views along this section of the circular route. Be careful, however, as the drop-off is impressive. Continue straight on until you reach the statue of the Virgin Mary, crossing several paths and tracks—some more clearly marked than others—and following the green markings. At the statue, continue to another viewpoint overlooking the cirque.

(1) Continue along the path and descend to the left, down a steep, winding slope. Cross the first track, then at the second, turn left onto a very muddy path. Pass a junction to reach a second one near the Source Noire.

(2) Follow the path down to the right. Soon, a viewing platform offers a view of the spring. Descend to a wide path.

(3) Follow it to the right to cross the river. Continue along the other bank to reach the religious buildings.

(4) Turn left and head up the road. Continue straight on to the bridge. Then follow the steep path on the right to reach the town hall, the restaurant and the zip-line reception. Go up between the restaurant and the reception, then continue straight on to reach the Source du Dessoubre.

(5) Head back down and follow the path to the left, before the restaurant. After a few metres, turn left onto the path, round the bend in the road and follow the path to the left towards the Belvédère de Ste-Catherine. You’ll soon reach a fork: continue left onto a path, which is sometimes narrow and vertiginous. After a steep descent, cross an open area and go straight on to the belvédère.

(6) Enjoy the view of the cirque. Return to the junction and head down to the left, towards the river. After a bend, reach a stream and follow it down to a footbridge.

(7) Head right towards the Grande Cascade. This can be seen on the right. Another waterfall can be reached at the very back of the cirque.

(8) Take in the scenery and return to the footbridge via the same route.

(7) Continue straight on to the next junction.

(3) Turn right and cross a stream before beginning the climb. At the track, follow it to the right until it ends. From here, a technical path begins with dizzying steps that allow you to gain altitude quickly. Reach a junction at the top of these steps.

(9) Turn right onto a path that is sometimes quite narrow and runs regularly along the cliff face. You will reach a cave at the Source du Lançot.

(10) Continue and, after a bend, climb some more steps to reach a wide track. Follow this track to the junction at La Scie-dessus.

(11) Take the first path which climbs steeply to the left. Halfway up, veer slightly to the right, then left at the end of this section to reach the Roche du Prêtre viewpoint.

(12) Enjoy this final view of the cirque and continue walking to the car park. (S/E)

Hello,
I think some parts of this route are very busy because they can be accessed from a car park below. However, other parts are probably less travelled.
The final climb (last kilometre) is quite tiring.
But the walk as a whole is lovely.

Exploring the Cirque de Consolation along alpine hiking trails. After the ladders, I went to the cave and then returned via the path on the left above the ladders: well-maintained and offering stunning views, then back along the original path.
Thank you for this lovely walk.

Hello,
I would like to point out that the proposed route is very technical, steep and slippery in wet weather, and is not suitable for a hiking group. It is best reserved for experienced walkers. If you are not particularly familiar with this area, it is possible to enjoy the same tourist attractions by putting together a much ‘quieter’ yet equally attractive route. Kind regards, JCD. 25210 Le Russey.
