The marble circuit in Caunes-Minervois

From Notre-Dame du Cros (Caunes-Minervois), a route takes you to former marble quarries, with a picnic stop at the renovated Ventajou refuge, near the ruins of the castle of the old village that has disappeared. On the way back, you pass by the Moulin de Biot, a former witness to a technique of using wind energy for sawing marble.

Description of the walk

Park at the Notre-Dame du Cros car park (Caunes-Minervois).

(S/E) From the car park, follow the yellow markings along the small path that branches off to the right of the church. Descend to the concrete bed of the Cros stream and cross it. Climb up to the right on a stony path and pass a cross.

(1) Leave the signs at the hairpin bend and take the path on the left to avoid the detour to the Sicard farm. Look for the Réseau Vert® signs to return to the track. Immediately turn left at the fork, heading towards the "Caunes-Minervois" branch of the marbrières circuit and leaving the Escaliers quarry on your right.

(2) Turn right and continue to the Protohistoric site of Cros, ignoring the yellow signpost on the left at the information board. Then follow the old quarry and continue north. You will reach a crossroads at the Aude-Hérault departmental boundary (altitude 388 m). Go almost straight ahead, towards the north-east, to reach the Castillou quarry.

(3) You can find it by following the yellow markings (formerly blue) on the right. Then rejoin the main track. Continue on the Grande Traversée de l'Hérault (Réseau Vert® signposting) which heads towards the Domaine de la Matte. Leave a farm access road on your right and ignore two successive paths on your left. After turning right, look for the signpost for La Planette on your left (La Matte signpost).

(4) Turn left. First climb north, then turn northeast onto the Planette plateau.

(5) A detour to the left on a very stony path leads to the Planète quarry (shelter). Avoid this loop by continuing straight ahead and rejoining the yellow markings. Follow them again for about 750 m

(6) Leave the signposting for a shortcut on the right in the clearing. Keep left shortly afterwards and climb a little further up to the Font Dal Rainard junction and rejoin the yellow signposting.

(7) Turn right, then descend southwards and join an intersection in a bend. Leave thePR®® for a moment to take a link to a marked path further down to the south-east. Turn left and descend more steeply. Go around the prominent feature on the left, where the castle was built (beautiful view from the promontory), then finish the descent along a path lined with low walls to reach a technical building for mobile phone relays. Turn right to reach the Ventajou refuge for a picnic break in the shelter.

(8) The refuge was built by a local association and is owned by the town hall of Félines-Minervois. After regaining your strength and admiring the view of the Minervois plain, head back towards the ruins of the old village via a path marked in yellow.

Continue along the hillside towards the north-west, then cross a first valley before making a little more effort to cross the Lauzerda rock barrier between two other ravines. Then descend more steadily towards the south-west and finish with a series of steps to arrive at the Bessous site, another marble quarry.

A passage on the right leads to the marble extraction site. A few remains and traces bear witness to this activity, which provided the noble material used to decorate the fireplaces of the Palace of Versailles.

(9) Head back towards a ravine along the path strewn with marble debris. After a bend, join a track.

(10) Turn right. After a hairpin bend, turn south then south-west and you will reach a crossroads near the Fraissé farm (panoramic view). Leave the access road to the house and take the one above, still following the "marble quarry circuit". Arrive at the Moulin de Biot, a windmill built to saw marble (see the "During the hike" tab).

(11) Stay on the path and follow the instructions: there is a risk of rockfalls in the ruins of the buildings. Follow the Ruisseau de la Boriette stream for a while before descending to a track.

(12) Follow it to the right. Ignore the return to Félines via Brama on the left and cross a ford

(13) Stay on this track until you reach La Boriette. On the right, rejoin the shortcut taken at the start of the route (near a large block of marble) to avoid going as far as the Sicard crossroads.

(1) Complete the loop by retracing your morning route in reverse to Chapelle Notre-Dame du Cros (S/E).

Practical information

(8) Ventajou Refuge

"This place was renovated (from 28 July to 14 August 2003) by a team of young international volunteers, organised by Etudes et Chantiers Midi-Pyrénées, the town hall of Félines-Minervois (owner of the premises) and the association Culture et Patrimoine Félinois, in order to serve as occasional shelter for people passing through." (information board in the refuge).
Please respect the premises during your visit

(Warning)
The author declines any responsibility for misinterpretation of the signposting, which he noted during his visit two years ago. The commune of Félines-Minervois is responsible for these trails, which can be started from several places, sometimes complicating the route with all the possible variations. A PDF brochure is available online to give you an idea of the loops associated with these quarries. However, it does not include the details that I took the trouble to write down before publishing this combination of routes, which has received such contradictory feedback: from disappointing toexcellent! Who to believe?

In the nearby area

Just before landmark (8), there is an opportunity on the right to climb up to the promontory where the Ventajou castrum was built. This fortified site, which appears in sources as early as 813, is therefore of Carolingian origin, and may even be Visigothic. It disappears from documentation towards the end of the 14th century, making it a probable direct or indirect victim of the Hundred Years' War. Its remains, now largely levelled, underwent some localised clandestine excavations in the 1950s and 1980s, which unearthed a significant amount of archaeological material. Fortunately, this was recovered in its entirety, but separated from any stratigraphic context.

(9) The marble used for dozens of fireplaces in the Palace of Versailles was extracted from the Bessous quarry. Steps have been built to allow visitors to descend into a fault line and discover traces of this activity (remains of mine carts).

(11) Biot Mill: "Wind to saw marble". Technical evidence of the use of wind energy for sawing marble. Important for the history of marble extraction in the Minervois region. The site includes the ruins of the windmill, buildings and ancillary structures, including the ruins of dwellings below, and quarries, as well as a spring that supplied water to the quarry workers' vegetable gardens. The mill is built on an artificial sloping platform (the buildings and retaining terrace are made from debris from the quarrying operations); the mechanism has disappeared. The spring has a corbelled vault.

This is a beautiful hike with interesting marble quarry ruins. Don't forget your GPS, as there are multiple yellow markings along the route that can be confusing. The return trip after Ventajou along the hillside is not so easy for people who are not in top physical condition. At point 9, we had trouble finding the stairs to go down (the path seems to be blocked). We came across a few hunters, but they were finishing their hunt. The village of Caunes Minervois is well worth a visit.
Thank you for this hike.

the first part is on a wide track with beautiful views. Don't forget to turn around to see the Pyrenees. Climb gently.
From Ventajou, the hike becomes a little more challenging on a narrower but still well-marked trail.
The hike takes 3½ hours of actual walking, plus breaks.
A beautiful hike

A very beautiful hike with magnificent landscapes and views.
We found the route between points 8 and 9 quite difficult. There are almost 2 kilometres of narrow paths (about 50-60 cm wide) with lots of loose stones (be careful where you put your feet) and very steep ascents and descents, exposed to the south. It wasn't a walk in the park, but we made it.
Otherwise, there were no difficulties.

Very beautiful hike with magnificent panoramic views. Be careful on the descent at the quarry after the Ventajou refuge, which is quite steep and has a lot of marble gravel
The description and signposting are not very clear at times, so we had to constantly check that we were on the right track

We took a wrong turn at the junction for La Planette and ended up arriving at Ventajou via the return route. So the mistakes kept coming. ...For the return journey, we took the Belsoleil route and followed the yellow PR signs, which led us to... Félines. Of course, there were no signs on the PR indicating the destination of Félines.
As usual, there are a few signposts missing in places where you might hesitate.
For the next hike, we'll take an altimeter and a geoportal map from the website.
