Description of the walk

(S) The hike starts on foot just before the bridge where the "La Fruitière" inn is located, on the D301T road coming from Névache, at an altitude of 1,857 metres.
Take the forest path that leads to the Refuge du Ricou (GR®57).

(1) Pass slightly above the Refuge du Ricou and turn right at the crossroads, heading east. Continue until you reach the sign for "La Replate 2291m".

(2) Follow the signs for Lac Laramon 0.5km. After this lake, continue along the path towards Lac du Serpent. The path then becomes less obvious as it passes through boulders, but is clearly marked by cairns. Keep heading north-east.

(3) Overlook the lakes in the Gardioles area.

(4) Change direction and head east, then return to a north-easterly direction to reach the Col du Grand Cros at an altitude of 2,848 metres. There is no sign indicating the pass.

(5) Continue climbing almost along the ridge to reach the Pas du Lac Blanc at an altitude of 2,935 metres.

(6) The descent to Lac Blanc is along a ridge, heading east. This section is quite steep and requires caution. A sign indicates that you have reached Lac Blanc.

(7) To reach theGRP® Tour du Mont Thabor, head south-east, off the trail, and descend to Ravin de Saume. This is a wide area where you can easily find your bearings. You will rejoin theGRP® at the Ruisseau de Saume crossroads.
Another option for reaching theGRP®, but which lengthens the route: Once at the lake, continue along the path towards the Col du Vallon. Before reaching it, cross theGRP® and take it on your right to reach the Ruisseau de la Saume crossroads.

(8) Continue to the right on theGRP® trail marked in red and yellow. Pass by the Chalet du Vallon and reach the Chapelle Saint-Michel.

(9) Continue south on theGRP® to reach the D301T road leading to the upper part of the Clarée Valley.

(10) Descend along the road, cross the upper town, pass in front of Névache Church and reach the car park in front of the Tourist Office (E).

Notes

Important note: To reach the starting point in July and August, take the shuttle bus from the car park in front of the tourist office in Névache Ville Haute (the end point of the hike). Otherwise, you will need to leave a car in the car park so that you can return to collect it at the starting point of the hike. Hitchhiking is also a way of getting to the starting point.
This hike requires good walking shoes. A pair of walking sticks is recommended.
Do not set off without a good supply of water, at least 1 litre or more in hot weather.

A very attractive route, but as indicated by the Clarée tourist information office on its map available at the tourist office, it should be classified as very difficult. Above all, I find that point 7 in the description does not reflect the terrain.
Although I am not the most experienced hiker, I still manage to find my way around.
But here, there are no landmarks to help you find the GRP from Lac Blanc.
In short, I was a little disappointed with this hike because I was tired of looking for non-existent landmarks and the app didn't help in this case.

Hello everyone,
I highly recommend this route, which is not too difficult and offers magnificent views. The arrival at the two lakes took my breath away with its beauty. The panoramic views are just as impressive. In October, of course, there were very few people around. The weather was beautiful, and I did this hike in shorts and a T-shirt. But I suppose it's a good idea to dress warmly if that's not the case for you. The occasional gusts of wind remind us that we are still above 2,000 metres up there.
Enjoy your hike!

A very beautiful hike with magnificent views. A few people at the first lake, but much quieter after that.

Superb hike, with very varied landscapes: beautiful views of the Ecrins during the ascent and then of the Rochers de la Paria, which are very impressive. After Lac du Serpent, we encountered very few people.
After the lake, there are numerous tracks, but they all converge, provided you don't take the one that goes around the lake. Otherwise, the route is fairly obvious despite the lack of signposts. At the pass, you really have to climb as if you were trying to reach the Pic du Lac Blanc. When you reach 2935m (Pas du Lac Blanc), there are no signposts, but you can see the path that descends steeply to Lac Blanc. Once there, regarding point 8 ((8) To join the GRP® Tour du Mont Thabor, head south-east, off the trail), do not hesitate to descend to the south-east. Cairns are clearly visible, allowing you to reach the meadow (Saume Longue) without ending up at the edge of the rocks visible to the east of Lac Blanc.

The climb to the Laramon and Serpent lakes is along a wide path, first a forest track and then a mule track, which is quite busy despite it being early in the season. The climb up to Lac des Gardioles is more difficult, over rocky scree still dotted with snow. There are several different routes down, but we take the one that takes us back to Lac de Laramon, as it is starting to rain heavily... A beautiful walk, with numerous lakes, although Laramon and Serpent are too busy (...).

Hello and thank you very much for these positive comments about the routes in the Upper Névache Valley.
There are two points that come up frequently in these comments and on which hikers generally agree:
1 - it's beautiful, it's true that this valley is quite exceptional,
2 - It is very busy, which is also true. For example, the shuttle buses that operate every year between 20 July and 28 August transported 87,000 hikers and tourists last year, or around 2,000 people per day.
On the plus side for this high valley and CO2 emissions, this meant that more than 500 cars were kept off the roads in Névache every day.
Happy hiking!

Very good route but very busy up to Laramont Lake, a little less so at Serpent Lake and very pleasant at Les Gardioles and for the off-piste descent.
