Access to the starting point: in Royat, go up Rue Auguste Rouzaud and turn at the Grotte des Laveuses car park (below the church).
(S/E) From the signpost in the car park, cross the footbridge, turn right, walk past the Grotte des Laveuses and the basalt columns and go up the steps. Continue straight ahead and walk up Boulevard de la Taillerie to the roundabout.
(1) At the roundabout, turn left for 50 metres, then right along the sports field. After 200 metres, take a path on the left going up into the woods. Take the stairs on the left and follow the path to a small road. Continue straight ahead on the same path and join the road 500 metres further on. Follow it uphill to the entrance to the arboretum car park.
(2) Turn left onto a good path that climbs into the woods and turns right after 50 metres, then left 250 metres further on. At the crossroads, go straight ahead (view of the Chaîne des Puys and the Croix de Ternant). Stay on this path, which has several hairpin bends: ignore the crossroads until you reach a T-junction at the edge of the Charade golf course.
(3) Follow this path to the left (view of Puy de Gravenoire).
(4) At the crossroads, take the path opposite leading down to Royat. Option to climb up to Rocher du Salut
(5) When you reach the houses, turn left onto the tarmac road that crosses the housing estate to the chapel/war memorial.
(6) Go down the street to the left of the chapel. At the roundabout, turn left, then left again onto Rue Jean Grand, which crosses Boulevard Romeuf and continues, shifting to the left, to Rue Nationale.
(7) Walk a few metres to the right, then take Rue de l'Arcade through a doorway on the left. Walk to the square in front of the fortified Romanesque church of Saint-Léger, go around it on the right and go down the steps on the left to return to the car park where you started (S/E).
