Canigou from Los Masos de Valmanya and the Crête du Barbet

A very beautiful hike, the difficulty lies in its length.
Passage through the chimney is visible as the yellow markings have been erased - path closed (not recommended).

Description of the walk

(S/E) From the Los Masos car park, head towards the road and take the path that branches off to the left towards Ras de Prat Cabrera / Cortalets refuge. This is theGR® 36 (red and white markings), which is well signposted. Make a long climb through the Bois de Patriques (allow about 2 hours). Arrive at the ridge (altitude approx. 1600 m).

(1) Follow the track on the left, which quickly joins a forest road.

(2) Just before a large right-hand bend, leave the track and take the path on the left towards Ras de Prat Cabrera.
You can also take the forest road that leads to the same place.

(3) Continue along the path on the ridge (west). Leave the return track on the right and the path that descends to the left (Balcon du Canigou). On the climb, keep to the left. Continue as close as possible to the fence. (The path is very well marked). At an altitude of around 2000 m, the path branches off to the left.

(4) You will see the path continuing on your right. Cut across, continuing straight up. Follow this path towards the Refuge des Cortalets, after passing a large scree slope. Continue to the next intersection. This is a very pleasant path along the mountainside. 300 m before the Refuge des Cortalets, you will come to a fork.

(5) Turn left towards the Crêtes du Barbet. You will come out of the pine forest (at around 2,270 m). Continue climbing the winding path on the bare ridge, admiring the Canigou on your right and the Vallon Barbet with its steep walls. Pass a large cairn (at around 2,630 m).

(6) Continue along the very exposed Crête Barbet (around 2710 m) (take care if it is windy) then descend to Portella de Vallmanya (well-marked path).

(7) Descend first, then climb up the slope on your right, to the north-west. Join the path coming from the Mariailles Refuge. Pass close to the impressive Vallon Barbet breach (around 2650 m).
Pass the Brèche Durier (2696 m) to reach the foot of the Cheminée.

(8) Reach the summit by climbing up the Cheminée. Although impressive, this passage, consisting of large steps, does not present any major difficulties (approximately 70 m). (For information: this is not a natural chimney).
Watch out for falling rocks. You will reach the summit of Pic du Canigou (Pic del Canigó) at an altitude of 2784 metres.

(9) The summit is marked by a cross and an orientation table, which is very useful for identifying the many peaks visible on the horizon. Descend via the normal route (easy), heading generally north on a very good path.

(10) Intersection with the variousGR® trails, theGRP® du Tour du Canigou and the Fontaine de la Perdiu (altitude 2264). Continue to the right to reach the Refuge des Cortalets. You can sleep at the refuge to break up the hike. You can also sleep at the refuge the night before the hike.

(11) Behind the refuge, take theGR® 10 andGR® 36 paths, which join the Balaig track.

(12) Continue north on this track and at Ras dels Cortalets take the track on the right towards Ras de Prat Cabrera.
We chose to descend via the forest track to Ras de Prat Cabrera. It is a little monotonous and a little longer, but much less tiring as the hike is long for a single day.

(3) At Ras de Prat Cabrera, you will find the path you took on the way there. Turn left and follow the path in the opposite direction.
Long descent towards Los Masos to (S/E).

Departure from Los Masos for Pic du Canigou and return, in two days (overnight stay in Cortalets).
The first part was beautiful, through a magnificent beech forest (and in the shade!). To avoid the forest path, we opted (at the "Ras del Brat Cabrera" point) for the GR10 variant... It's more difficult! ... but the elevation gain is significant. Superb panoramic views, however.
The next day we set off late (7 a.m.) because the forecast was for -4°C at the summit. The Crête du Barbet was magnificent, but this route is probably not the best when the wind is strong enough to knock you off your feet, as was the case...
We stopped back at the refuge for a welcome coffee. Friendly welcome.
Classic return trip according to the itinerary. (The forest track isn't the most pleasant, but it does spare your knees on the way down! )

A fantastic hike, a truly perfect route! Nothing to say! 👍🏻

There may be some errors in the timing! But it depends on the level, so don't overlook the categories.

A beautiful hike offering splendid panoramic views of both the surrounding peaks and the sea.
Four hours of climbing and two and a half hours of descent (with some running), not counting the break at the peak and a break at the Cortalets refuge (a place with a special atmosphere that is well worth experiencing!).
Despite the 18°C temperature in Los Masos, don't underestimate the cold due to the altitude and the icy wind caused by the Tramontane! Fortunately, once you leave the Crête du Barbet, you are sheltered and the climb up the chimney is all the more "pleasant".

A very beautiful route, physically demanding, but the first part of the hike is in the shade. Bring plenty of water.
Enjoy your hike.

I recommend doing this hike in spring or autumn.

Hike completed at the end of September over two days with a bivouac near Les Cortalets before climbing up via Le Barbet (the night was quite chilly). The Masos car park was almost full at 1 p.m.
The route via the Barbet ridge offers a less frequented alternative with a beautiful panorama and breathtaking views of Canigou. We just missed the fork at stage 7 when looking for the path coming from Marirailles because the signposts are faded from here on, but we found it again a little further down to reach the foot of the chimney, which is not particularly difficult if you enjoy "hiking with your hands". The only risk is overcrowding, which wasn't too bad when we were there.
The descent via the track from 11 was appreciated for its accessibility after all that climbing and a steeper descent in the woods before Los Masos.

A magnificent hike!
The Los Masos car park was full when I arrived (I started the hike at 8 a.m., obviously after everyone else).
There were a few people in the Patriques woods, but from (5) to (7) Crête Barbet to Portella de Vallmanya, I only met two people. This was the most interesting part, in my opinion.
The chimney poses no technical difficulty for those who are not afraid of heights. The only danger is the overcrowding of the area and the risk of falling rocks.
The descent to the Cortalets refuge is pleasant and "rolling" (a pint of beer on the terrace of the refuge: an irreplaceable luxury!).
On the other hand, the 5 km of forest tracks after the refuge are not great. It would be nice to find an alternative route to reach Ras de Prat Cabrera.
We came across a group of mountain bikers pushing their bikes uphill... someone will have to explain that to me
Ten hours of walking with breaks and a slump an hour before the cairn at 2,600 m on the Barbet ridges.

Hello tetram333
I agree with you about the mileage being around 23 km.
I agree with you regarding the prohibited access to the unmarked chimney.
Access to the cangó

Info 2023: The route linking Pic du Canigó and passing through the chimney is no longer marked. The Conflent Canigó Tourist Office cannot provide information on its accessibility. It is strongly recommended that you take the Barbet ridges (PR8) or the GR®10 if you are coming from the Mariailles refuge to reach the Cortalets refuge.

Please also note: as climbing the peak is a high-altitude activity, it is important to be prepared, informed and well equipped.

Superb approach to Canigou, with the summit gradually coming into view.
Ascent via the Grand Barbet, which is not very busy :-)
Ibex and marmots waiting behind the Barbet.
Passage through La Cheminée visible because the yellow markings have been erased - path closed following the rockfall of 2022?
Return via the classic route, which is much busier with hikers, to the refuge, ideally located for a short break.

However, please note that the actual distance is around 23.5 km for the route shown, but this is no problem.

The signposting and arrow signs are correct. The ease of parking at Los Masos de Valmanya is interesting. The climb up to the Patrique woods is a little long, as you might expect after preparing with the help of the map and description. From Prat Cabréra, there are splendid views in various directions. This route avoids the longer route from Col de Jou and offers a change from the route starting from Fillols. I am now going to look at the approach to the start announced a few years ago, namely from "Esquena d'Aze". For the return journey, I was pleased to choose the descent from Les Cortalets, proposed as an alternative via the LLech track to Prat Cabréra, instead of the route passing by the remains of the aircraft wreck. The Les Cortalets refuge is an essential stop, so well positioned on the route and with attractive services on offer.

A very enjoyable, challenging hike.
We left at 8 a.m. and returned at 5 p.m. We took long breaks, including a stop at the Refuge des Cortalets on the way back for a drink and a nap in the sun.
This route is accessible to experienced hikers. It took us 4 hours to climb, not counting breaks. We had beautiful blue skies, but even though the temperature didn't exceed 25 degrees at the bottom, 3 litres of water per person is essential.
You can refill your water bottles on the way down to the refuge.
This route is not very popular because it is little known and quite steep.

A trail running route. 5 hours 15 minutes round trip, an early start (7am) which I recommend. Once you reach the junction leading to the refuge, the ridge route is demanding. For the path to the chimney, I recommend securing it and climbing up, as the path is not well marked. BEWARE, the chimney is not for everyone. You must remain very cautious.
Otherwise, it is a pleasant and very mountainous route. For the return to the Portales refuge, the descent is really behind you, facing south. Do not look elsewhere. In summary, if you are experienced hikers, leaving early and walking, you will be back at the end of the day. Departure at 7 a.m., return at 6.30 p.m. with a break of 1 hour/1 hour 30 minutes.
