Description of the walk

Park at Coll Palomeres without obstructing traffic (start of the track or hard shoulder of the D13 towards La Bastide).

(S/E) Head south on the concrete track parallel to the forest track until you reach a junction with a footpath.

(1) Leave the track and take the path that climbs to the left through the undergrowth. Be careful, it's uphill: a 100 m climb over just 300 m. Join a track that is in fact the old Rapalum-Formentera mining railway line.

(2) Take this old railway line on the left. Go through two tunnels and you will reach an old mine where there are also mining remains. The route leads to a track which you should follow straight ahead and, after about 100 metres, you will come to an intersection.

(3) Leave the track and join the old railway line by going down to the left. A little further on, you will reach the junction with the GRP® de la Ronde du Canigó.

(4) Leave the old railway line and rejoin the GRP® which climbs to the right and leads to the forest track.

(5) Cut across the forest track by climbing up opposite. The path alternates between sections in the undergrowth, on a balcony and then back in the undergrowth before reaching the Tour de Batère: enjoy the wonderful panorama.

(6) Return to the signpost. Head east towards Amélie-les-Bains to reach a forest track.

(7) Follow the track to the left until you reach the GRP® intersection.

(5) Descend to the right.

(4) Stay on the GRP® and continue downhill. Further on, you will reach a place called Els Menerots, where there is an old mining building (iron ore roasting furnace).

(8) Continue on the GRP®, cross a stream and you will eventually reach a forest track.

(9) Cross it and continue straight ahead , following the instructions posted on the ground: you are crossing private property. Further on, the trail returns to the woods before ending this beautiful heritage walk at Coll Palomeres (S/E).

Worth a visit

Another route starting from Coll Palomeres is the Mines de la Pinouse.

The village of La Bastide is nearby.

The Refuge de Batère (one of the refuges on the Ronde du Canigó) is less than an hour's walk from the Tour de Batère.

Very pretty hike, mostly in the woods.
Discover a mining site.
Arrival at the Batère tower with an extraordinary view of the Pic du Canigó, which was particularly snow-covered this year for 1 April.
Be careful when crossing the streams, as they were particularly difficult to navigate due to the recent rainfall at the end of March.
