Departure from the Lycée du Pays de Retz, 1 rue Georges Charpak.
(S/E) From the car park, go down Rue Jules Ferry on the right, using the pedestrian walkway. When you reach the Val Saint-Martin lake, continue straight ahead to the dyke.
Turn left to go down the wide concrete ramp and cross the playground to reach Rue Jules Ferry.
Yellow markings.
(1) Cross at the traffic lights and continue along the path overlooking the D213 (this section can be a bit noisy depending on traffic). The path veers away from the road to join the Haute-Perche Canal.
(2) Cross the first footbridge, then follow the edge of the canal along the towpath, which goes around a well-hidden sewage treatment plant. Leave the canal and head back up to the road.
(3) At the signpost, cross over and take the small path on the left between the road and the railway line. Follow it for about 500 metres. In places, vegetation has reclaimed the path, forcing you to walk along the edge of the road (which is not very busy).
(4) At the new signpost, turn left into the undergrowth and rejoin the canal at a restored fishing hut (information panel on the history of the Haute Perche Canal, its fauna and flora).
Cross a footbridge and follow the edge of the canal for about 700 metres. It is now on your right. Look out for old fisheries along the route, some of which are still in use.
(5) Reach a new footbridge and continue along the towpath for about 800 m. The canal is now on your left.
(6) At a bench, leave the canal on the right and follow the path along the edge of the meadow to reach a road.
Off the marked trail
(7) Turn left to reach the village of Clion-sur-Mer. Head for the church and its massive bell tower built on an old watchtower.
(8) Turn around and head towards Rue des Nondales.
Yellow markings
Go past the path where you left the canal and continue straight ahead. After a street on the left, the road continues along a stony, dusty track (no entry sign except for residents).
(9) Continue to the next signpost located where the road passes under the railway line. Continue straight ahead through the passage between the railway line and the small road. Walk for almost 1 km until you reach the path that goes around the sewage treatment plant, which you took on the way there.
(3) Retrace your steps along the canal, then walk up the D213 and head for the traffic lights on Rue Jules Ferry.
No markings
(1) Cross and head up to the right towards the school via the footpath to return to the car park (S/E).
