The Cap Fagnet viewpoint

The destination of this hike is Cap Fagnet, at the top of the cliffs overlooking Fécamp, where you can enjoy a breathtaking view.

This site can be reached via a country route that includes paved sections, as described here. It can also be reached via a very short circular route (1 km), also described as a variant.

(Please note) Due to rockfalls, access to the viewpoint is prohibited (see message posted on 08/05/2023).

Description of the walk

Departure from the car park shared by the town hall, school and church of Senneville, Rue Sainte-Anne (hiking sign).

No signposts

(S/E) Head to the western end of the car park where the hiking sign is located. Then take a lane on the left and go around the school on the left. Then turn left into the Sente de l'Église. At the end, follow a path on the right between two hedges. Continue along a lane (signposted Sente Buissionnière further on). At the end, turn left.

Red and white markings

(1) After about 100 metres, turn right onto Rue du Val aux Ormes and follow theGR®21. At the crossroads, turn left (ignore the private driveway at no. 204). At the next fork, turn right towards Val aux Vaches. Follow a small road that alternates between tarmac and gravel sections.

(2) When the road turns left, continue straight ahead along a path. Immediately afterwards, turn right at the corner of a wooden field fence. Walk along a copse on your left, then continue between the fields.

(3) Come out onto the D79 and follow it to the left for about 400 metres. Walk along the Fécamp wind farm on your right.

N.B. For safety reasons, the cliff-edge path is closed between the wind farm and Cap Fagnet. TheGR®21follows the route described below but not the purple line that is supposed to represent it: the 1:25,000 map is not up to date.

(4) At the wind farm gate, leave the road, go through a chicane and down a staircase on the left. Then follow a path to the right and ignore another path going down to the left. At the next fork, take the path on the right going uphill. Pass a small blockhouse and ignore a path on the right and then a staircase on the left. Then turn right uphill, passing an antenna on your left and then a small building on your right. Cross the access road to the antenna and take a path bordered by a fence on the left. Walk along a car park on your right and you will come out onto the D79.

(5) Follow the road to the left for about 150 metres, on the pavement on the left, until you reach an orientation table at the foot of the Notre-Dame du Salut Chapel (panoramic view of Fécamp).

(6) Cross the road at the pedestrian crossing and follow the no-entry road that leads to the semaphore. Go around it on the right. Leave the blockhouses on your right (including one called Mammut in German) and follow a path of metal plates to the viewpoint with a metal railing (extensive panorama).

(7) Retrace your steps for a few dozen metres. At the "Flore" sign, follow a grassy path to the left and walk alongside the blockhouses on your right. Further on, first turn right then left, leaving a building on your right and continuing along the cliff-edge path (see the warning in the practical information section). At a three-way junction, turn right onto a wide grassy path not shown on the map (the cliff-edge path on the left is closed). Return to the car park entrance.

(5) Walk along the car park on your left and follow theGR® in the opposite direction to the outward journey. Stay on the marked path and ignore any paths branching off to the right.

(4) Follow the D79 road to the right.

(3) Here, there are two options, both marked on the map:

- Red and white markings (except at the end)
Take the same path as on the way there in the opposite direction. Follow theGR® to (1). There, turn left (leaving theGR® to the right). Finish by taking the Sente Buissonnière on the right, then the Sente de l'Église on the left, and you will find the car park on the right (S/E).

- Without signposts
Continue straight on the D79. Enter Senneville-sur-Fécamp and continue straight on the main road. Near the church, at a crossroads marked with a cross, turn right towards the town hall, and you will soon find the car park where you started (S/E).

Notes

In dry weather, good sports shoes are sufficient for this hike.

Toilets are available at the Cap Fagnet car park (5).

Warning:
Be very careful on the cliffside path between the viewpoint (7) and the car park (5). Do not cross the barriers that have been placed in certain areas and, where there are no barriers, do not get too close to the edge of the cliff: there is a 100-metre drop, and any fall would be fatal. The section north of the wind farm is off-limits.

Alternative:
It is of course possible to limit yourself to the tour of Cap Fagnet by parking in the car park (5) and only doing the short circular route via the viewpoint (7). This very shortened version is about one kilometre long.

Hike completed by the author on 26 December 2020.

Worth a visit

- Senneville Church (12th century, remodelled in the 16th-17th centuries) (S/E).
- Panorama of the town of Fécamp and its harbour (6).
- Notre-Dame du Salut Chapel (13th-16th century). In December 2020, the chapel was unfortunately closed for safety work.
- Monument to the Terre-Neuvas, at the foot of the chapel (6).
- Extensive panoramic view from the viewpoint (7).
- Cliffside path between (7) and (5).
- Numerous blockhouses dating from the Second World War.

A pleasant walk, even if you have to walk a few hundred metres along the road before rejoining the path. The view from the cape is magnificent, even if it was foggy on the day we visited. For enthusiasts, this is one of the few blockhouses I have seen equipped with early radar systems. Be careful on the circular return path from the viewpoint: the path has become too dangerous to use and is now blocked off.

Hello smashdc, and thank you for your comments.

I have just added a warning in the introduction about the ban on access to the viewpoint. It is possible that this ban will remain in place for quite some time...

PLEASE NOTE: due to rockfalls, it is impossible to reach the viewpoint => barriers 2.2 metres high.
There is no point in taking the road to Senneville when you see the endless straight road and the town stretching into infinity (because you will have to come back too)!
So, I walked back down through the woods to the town (lovely sloping streets) then drove to Senneville and resumed the hike.
I started the hike in Fécamp, which is much better.

The views of Fécamp from Cap Fagnet are magnificent.
There is indeed a lot of traffic on the road. We therefore took the same route back as we did on the way there in order to reduce the distance we had to travel on this road.
Thank you.

Hello Les Doudouxes,

Thank you for your comments. I share your impression that there is a bit too much tarmac... My intention was to follow the cliff-top path from the wind turbines to the headland. However, this is prohibited for safety reasons, which I would not dream of questioning.

A pleasant and very easy walk (completely flat!). The view at the Cape is splendid and you can have a picnic there. However, the route to get there is quite long on the main road, which is a shame (but the road near the cliffs is closed to traffic).

Many thanks to the author of the guide; the description was extremely accurate, making it impossible to get lost!
An easy and enjoyable hike with a magnificent view of the sea, plus the blockhouses and the chapel. Not only do you walk in pleasant surroundings, but there is also plenty to see (in addition to nature). Perfect for beginner hikers like us (but I suppose more experienced hikers will enjoy it too!).
