Le Baigura from the leisure centre

Baigura is one of the iconic peaks of the Basque Country, particularly for its view, which can give you a crick in your neck on a clear day. The panoramic view is renowned, with few peaks missing from the picture and even the peaks of the Hautes-Pyrénées visible on a very clear day. Baigura is also an exemplary mountain in terms of its commitment to combining traditional pastoralism with the outdoor activities offered by the leisure centre. Everyone has a role to play in maintaining these exceptional landscapes and sustaining the economy of the valleys. Baigura also offers a concentration of ecosystems that are a delight to visit on this hike. From heathland with gorse and ferns to rocky, windswept ridges, through undergrowth and peat bogs, there are endless discoveries to be made and the horizon is constantly changing. A benchmark for circular sporty hikes.

Description of the walk

From Hasparren, follow signs for Saint-Palais and Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port (D22). At Bonloc, leave the road to Saint-Palais on your left and continue straight on towards Mendionde then Hélette (D22) for about 8 km. At the roundabout before Hélette, turn right towards the Baigura leisure centre (D119). Park 2.5 km further on, in the car park on the left-hand side of the road opposite the Baigura leisure centre.

(S/E) From the car park opposite the leisure centre (300 m), follow the path that starts next to a house (start sign). Go through a chicane and climb up to the crossroads in the ferns between the copses.

(1) Turn left onto the path that climbs between the ferns. Then cross the Baigura road and continue straight ahead. When the path comes to a fence, it continues to the right on a steeper slope through the gorse. Keep following the path uphill to a grassy plateau with a sheepfold and panoramic views.

(2) Climb straight up through the grass above the sheepfold (470 m); ignore the intersection with the discovery trail and continue climbing straight ahead towards the beech forest. After crossing another path, the trail crosses to the right, still steep, towards a rocky ridge. It makes two hairpin bends under the trees and then winds between the boulders. As you pass through a small gap (740 m), you will see the summit of Baigura and the final climb.

(3) The trail now descends in a straight line up the western flank of the mountain. Pass above a bend in the road. At the last bend, climb up the grass on the left.

(4) Follow the ridge to the right. Pass by the orientation table and the cromlechs. 50 m further on, pass to the right of the fenced transmitters, then follow the road and path to the last antennas. Climb a few metres to the left to reach the summit of Baigura.

(5) From Baigura (897 m), return along the ridge to the orientation table.

(4) Continue towards the summit of Erregelu, approaching it from the left.

(6) After a break, leave Erregelu (865 m) via the long eastern ridge. Initially steep but easy, the path then continues along the fairly flat Kurutze ridge (view to Soule). It then turns right onto the southern slope for a long descent to a grassy plateau. Once on the grassy plateau, keep to the right-hand path until you reach a bend.

(7) Turn left and follow a new path along the mountainside. You will reach a pass (604 m) with a ruin, an orientation table and tables.

(8) Pass to the left above the ruins where the path descends into the grass. Then turn left twice to walk along the discovery trail, which runs along the hillside and features themed information panels. Just after crossing a stream (info "springs and streams"), take the left-hand path at the fork.

(9) The path passes through a remarkable wood and then descends gently towards lawns. Keep the obvious path in front of you, which rejoins an intersection overlooking the Buztingorri sheepfold.

(10) From the intersection (501 m), descend to the right through the grass to pass near the sheepfold (paragliding school site) and rejoin the path taken on the way there.

(2) Return to the starting point by retracing your steps (S/E).

Worth a visit

(S/E) Leisure centre
Many outdoor activities can be enjoyed from the Baigura leisure centre: hiking, of course, but also trail running, paragliding, mountain biking, off-road scootering and climbing. Pastoralism also plays a major role in Baigura and it is essential to maintain good cohabitation for everyone's comfort.

Griffon vultures
Perched on a rocky outcrop or gliding through the sky, griffon vultures are large birds of prey that accompany you on the Baigura. Exclusively scavengers, these rock-dwelling birds move by gliding on warm air currents and are the flight advisors of paragliders!

Cromlechs
At Baïgura, as on many peaks in the Basque Country, you can see cromlechs, which are circles of stones. These are 3,000-year-old funerary monuments, where the shepherds of the time deposited the ashes of the deceased.

(9) Peat bogs and insectivorous plants
Below the bend in the path, the constant runoff of surface water has created a bog. Mosses and sphagnum cover this spongy ground, but you can also find sundews, small protected plants that are insectivorous.

Superb hike with bright sunshine and feet in the snow from mid-slope, ending with 10 cm at the summit. A truly magnificent sight, with no paragliders – and it's easy to see why.
The hike took exactly four hours at a leisurely pace and followed the route.
Quite a steep climb but no major difficulties.
Highly recommended.

The climb takes about 1.5 hours and is a bit tough at first, but what a reward!
A beautiful route where you can admire a paragliding launch site.

A very beautiful hike with a fairly steep climb to the summit of Baïgura, where you are rewarded with a fantastic 360° view of the neighbouring peaks and the Basque coast. After enjoying the spectacle of paragliders launching themselves from the neighbouring peak of Erregelu, the return trip along the ridge, which is longer and less steep, is magnificent, with no risk of vertigo for those who are prone to it.
With a break for lunch, I completed the hike in 4 hours and 10 minutes. Compared to many other routes, I would classify it as "moderate" rather than "difficult".
All in all, a very beautiful hike.

No difficulty following the route. The climb up to Baigura is quite steep, but the way back down is more pleasant. The view from Baigura is magnificent, with beautiful views of the mountains and the spectacle of paragliders! Just a tip for the return trip: at point 1, take the path opposite, which leads directly back to the leisure centre. This avoids having to take the paved road and completes the loop.

Departure by road as indicated... Out of curiosity, return from point 1 to S/E via the path... No difficulty. Saw no stairs or ropes... Has the path been redeveloped since?
Spectacular sight of numerous hang gliders launching themselves from the summit. And vultures still present....

Hello
The Baigura route from the leisure centre is clearly signposted... To start, there is a small path which is not the one you describe, but which joins the start of the climb and avoids following the path of the little train.

A beautiful and relatively short hike (3 hours + lunch break) that leads to the summit of Baigura (unfortunately, it is topped with antennas, but at least it is easily recognisable).
The climb is a little tough if you're not very experienced, but the view is worth it, and the descent is very pleasant.

This route already existed here thanks to Taboulechat. But well done to the CAPB (Basque Country Urban Community) which, for some time now, has been putting the beautiful routes from its Local Hiking Plan (PLR) online on Visorando. This means that there is no longer any need to carry the guidebooks published for each province. We hope that, little by little, all the hikes in this PLR will be available here, even those that will be added soon.
For this one, there are very reliable descriptions and excellent GPS tracking (and clear signposting) for this beautiful hike in Baigura, which was less crowded on this weekday in October.
Thanks to the CAPB team for doing this work.
