Description of the walk

From the D918, drive through Louhossoa and head towards Hélette via the D119.
Park at the car park for the Hélette leisure centre.

(S/E) Take the path heading south-west, to the left of the car park.

(1) Take the path leading off to the left towards the south-east. Cross the tarmac road leading up to Baïgura. The path veers south-west to a three-way junction.

(2) Follow the right-hand fork, opposite. Then ignore the paths branching off to the right; the path runs alongside a sheepfold. Halfway up the slope, ignore the path leading to the summit and take the nature trail on the left, which winds along the hillside.

(3) Cross the River Aran and arrive at a junction.

(4) Continue straight ahead (south-east) and uphill. The path runs alongside a wooded area, crosses a meadow and enters the woods, where you can admire some fine beech trees.

(5) Retrace your steps along the same path.

(4) Turn right downhill onto a grassy track until you reach a track suitable for vehicles near a sheepfold.

(6) Take the track on the left heading north. The path is circular and curves left towards a crossroads.

(7) Continue straight on towards the river, cross it and rejoin the three-way junction from the outward journey.

(2) Turn right onto the path opposite to the one taken on the way there and continue to the car park (S/E).

The beech trees are magnificent. The view is superb. The climb is a bit tough when you're approaching seventy.

A superb hike. A real treat, with stunning scenery and a description of the flora and fauna.
The elevation gain is manageable both on the way up and down. We arrived early and found a space in the car park just as you’d explained.
The app is also very handy, as it alerts you if you take a wrong turn.
Nothing but positives!!!

A short hike reminding us that the Basque Country isn't flat...
Unfortunately, the rain accompanied us on the way back.
We’ll have to do it again in the sunshine so we can take the time to admire the beech trees.
