The Baerenkopf from Rougemont-le-Château

A hike with no technical difficulty but a significant elevation gain. Beautiful panoramic views, including the Belfort Gap. This hike takes you past the highlights of the ruins of Rougemont Castle, Sainte Catherine Chapel, the Sudel, the Baerenkopf and the hamlet of Saint Nicolas.

Description of the walk

Start from the church car park.

(S) Walk about a hundred metres along the road towards Law/Masevaux. Cross the road and follow the yellow-white-yellow rectangular markings on the tarmac towards Sudel/Baerenkopf.

(1) A little further on, the path, which has become a forest track, leads to Le Plainot.

(2) Pass a hiking shelter on your right and, via a steep climb, head towards the ruins of the Old Castle.

(3) Enter the site, then retrace your steps to rejoin the original path.

Walk for about a hundred metres, then turn left to follow the signs for Sainte Catherine/Sudel marked with a Yellow Rectangle.

(4) Pass the path climbing to the right (GR®532) and make a round trip to visit the Sainte Catherine chapel.

Walk for about 1 km, ignore the path leading to Baerenkopf and turn right following the same symbol. The path leads to Sudel (altitude marker).

(5) After about 1 km, at a junction, take the path marked with a blue circle on the left. After about 100 metres, turn left onto theGR®531marked with a Blue Rectangle.
This trail takes us to the Bruckenwald Farm Inn. It’s a good spot to stop for lunch. Walk past the farm and continue towards Lachtelweiher (lake)/Lochberg (FA). After about 200 metres, turn left towards Baerenkopf, following the red-white-red Red Rectangle.

(6) After 800 m, you reach the Baerenkopf, the highest point of our hike (1074 m). Begin the descent to the left, following the Red Triangle, to enter the Lamadeleine-Val-des-Anges national forest. Pass Mont Brûlé and the Haquin in succession.

(7) The path reaches the Trou du Loup. Leave the wayside shrine on your right and take the path on the left, marked with a Red Cross, towards the hamlet of St Nicolas. Cross the hamlet and, on the way out, leave the road leading to Rougemont and turn right.

(8) Follow the River Saint Nicolas, keeping an eye out for the Red Circle and Red Cross symbols.

(9) Further on, turn left onto a tarmac road, then take the road on the left back towards Saint Nicolas.

(10) After 50 m, turn right and take a steep path on your right, which leads you to a vantage point overlooking the road to Rougemont. Follow the Red Circle and Blue Circle symbols. After about 200 m, cross a stream and continue following the same markings. Finally, the end of our walk brings us to the car park of the Casino store.
From there, turn left to return to the starting car park (E).

Despite the rain during the second half of the hike, we enjoyed discovering this part of the Vosges. The combination of the IGN map and signposts allowed us to follow the route without any problems. The paths and trails are pleasant, even if the descent to Trou du Loup is tough on the legs.
A hike that is both "touristy" and "sporty".

Hello, this route follows easy, tree-lined paths (with beautiful woodland). It crosses numerous other trails... so you may well find yourself walking a few extra steps.
A few metres below the summit, heading towards the Col du Lochberg, is the CAF Baerenkopt refuge. Finally, the last few kilometres are full of surprises.

Got lost three times... The signposting was wrong. Not enough information.
Otherwise, lovely climbs... Shaded route. Peaceful.

The signposting is unclear, so you must bring a map with you. A charming farmhouse inn with views over the valley, where you can stop for a bite to eat before the climb up the Baerenkopf; it’s a shame that there isn’t a clear view of the surrounding valleys from the summit. Take care on the descent down the ‘Trues de Loup’.
A lovely, well-shaded hike along beautiful forest paths with hardly any tarmac.

I recommend this hike for the over-70s – it’ll make them feel young again!

Take care on the descent to the ‘Trou du Loup’ – it’s very steep with lots of loose stones churned up by forestry tractors (watch your backside).
The colours of the signposts don’t match the markings on the trees, but your map will do the trick.
The only downside is that I didn’t see any wildlife, even though the walk started at 6.15 am.

This hike takes place mainly through beautiful forests. At times I could see the Alps (from the castle), the Belfort Pass, and the Masevaux Valley. I saw plenty of wildlife but only came across one group of three people.
It’s best done on a hot day. You need to pay close attention to the markings; the ones described are no longer up to date – Red Triangles and Red Crosses have been replaced by other markers, so a map is essential.

A lovely hike with 20 cm of snow at the summit.
My GPS showed 16.5 km at the end of the hike.
