Description of the walk

Park in the car park at the recycling centre. The walk is signposted with a Blue Ring.

(S/E) Head back down towards the access road and turn right onto the path marked with a Blue Ring.
Walk along the embankment of the old quarry. Pass three paths on the left.

(1) Pass a shelter, walk alongside the ponds fed by the Margrabant spring, and continue straight on, ignoring a path on the right.

(2) Turn left onto the D25 towards Rougemont-le-Château.

(3) After 400 m, take the first left onto Chemin du Mont Marty. An information board provides details of the Mont Marty nature trail, featuring five educational stations and sixteen botanical markers on the trees in our forests. To see it, you’ll need to make a short detour of about 500 m. Our route will only take in three botanical markers.

At the first junction, continue straight ahead whilst the discovery trail branches off to the left. Pass a path on the left and admire Château Ehrard on the right. The path then curves to the left.
At the next junction, turn right and head towards Rougemont-le-Château.

(4) Turn right onto the D2 and take the first road on the left. At the end of the houses, it turns into a path that climbs into the forest. Walk alongside the Étangs des Soldats. Follow the signposting indicating to turn right at the next junction and head back down.

(5) Turn left onto the tarmac road (Rue de Saint-Nicolas). At the house, continue along the path that runs alongside the ponds, gradually gaining height, and eventually leads out into a clearing.

(6) Turn left and head downhill along the clearing (ignore the path that branches off immediately to the left). Enter the forest and continue downhill, ignoring the paths to the right and left. Archers sometimes practise on the field beside the path. You’ll reach the D2.

(7) Follow it to the left, heading south-east for 300m. Then turn onto the path on the right after a small pond and climb for about 200m.

(8) Turn left and do not follow another route marked in red which heads off in the other direction. The Blue Ring markings are a good guide.
Continue climbing and turn right to reach the recycling centre and the car park at the start (S/E).

Erhard Castle

History
In 1845, Victor Erhard began building a mechanical weaving mill with 200 looms on land he had just purchased. The looms were to be powered by a water wheel. From 1847, however, he used a steam engine to act as an auxiliary motor for the wheel. Since 1859, the weaving mill has been supplied by a spinning mill built by the company in Masevaux (68).
The owner’s residence, built of cut stone and rendered sandstone rubble, comprises a basement, a ground floor, a square first floor and an attic floor, with a roof featuring long broken gables, a hipped roof and a half-hipped roof, as well as a pavilion roof, all covered in slate.

The Erhard cotton mill became the Manufacture de Rougemont, then the Filiac small-scale metalworking factory

No description required; the Blue Ring markings are sufficient on their own.
A very beautiful route, mostly through woodland, offering the chance to discover numerous ponds and lovely estates. The grounds of Ehrard Castle, which you walk alongside for nearly 400 metres, are particularly lovely at this time of year in late April, with the magnolias and camellias coming to an end and the rhododendrons beginning to bloom in great numbers throughout the grounds.
For your information, the distance between points 2 and 3 (the section on the county road) is not 40 metres but 400 metres.

A pleasant walk, 70% of which is in the shade, which is very welcome on hot days.
Beautiful forest paths with lovely ponds and lovely properties.

Please note: do not park on the grass next to the small car park at the recycling centre, as your vehicle may be towed away; this area is private even though it is not signposted (we were stopped by a member of staff on our return).
