Lake and peat bogs on Vestvågøya

An easy route that winds through peat bogs and crosses numerous lakes. Its final destination, Kringbotnsvatnet, is a fairly large lake at an altitude of 250 metres. Along the way, the view stretches far into the distance over the sea and the mountains of the Lofoten Islands.

Description of the walk

Park in the large, well-equipped car park, which is signposted from the road.

(S/E) Take the track into the forest and continue straight ahead until you reach a barrier that opens to the left. It has a clever counterweight system that closes it automatically.

(1) 300 m after the antenna on the right of the path, follow the path that branches off to the left. The path then climbs gently. You will come to a fork.

(2) Take the left-hand path, which continues fairly flat, and continue straight ahead. Cross several peat bogs and pass several small lakes. You will reach a Y-junction.

(3) Keep left and descend gradually towards the lake. Cross a three-way junction and walk along part of the lake for about 250 m.

(4) Turn back to the three-way junction.

(5) Take the path on the left that runs alongside the lake and is parallel to the path you took on the way there, but climbs a little higher.

(3) Return to the outward route and retrace your steps to return to the starting point (S/E).

Notes

The trail crosses peat bogs, which are, by definition, very wet environments. There is a lot of mud and sometimes passages through water. Wear suitable footwear.
In foggy conditions, landmarks are virtually non-existent for most of the route.
Mobile phone coverage is available along the entire route.
Toilets are available at the start.
There is a shelter at the eastern end of the lake. It is not very visible from a distance as it is covered with grass, but its entrance opens onto the lake.
