Lac du Mercantour and Col de Cerise

A short but challenging hike in a wild valley in Haute-Vésubie.
Rocky landscape, a pretty lake and a beautiful view of several Italian peaks, including Monte Matto (3,088 m).

Description of the walk

Start at marker 370, on the RD89 road leading to Vallon de Salèse.

(S/E) Take the small private road that climbs eastwards and follow theGR® to marker 371.

(1) At marker 371, turn left (west) towards Col de Cerise (yellow markings). The path winds its way up through the woods.

(2) At marker 373, continue straight ahead (northeast) towards Col de Cerise. A few metres further on, you will come to another marker (374).

(3) Turn right and continue northeast. The trail overlooks a stream that you will need to cross to climb up the right bank. From this point on, the slope becomes steeper and the trees become sparser. You will arrive at a pile of rocks just before the (small) Lac de Cerise.

(4) At the lake, continue north-west. The slope is gentle, then the path turns north-east and approaches a stream as the slope becomes steeper. In the second left-hand bend, a cairn marks the start of the path leading to Lac du Mercantour.

(5) At this bend, cross the stream and follow the cairns towards the northeast. Climb the switchbacks on the left bank to reach Lac du Mercantour in about 20 minutes.

(6) At the lake, enjoy the tranquillity of this wild cirque facing the Cime du Mercantour (2,772 m), which gave its name to the massif... then take the same route back down as you took on the way up.

(5) Once at the bend, continue right towards the north-west to head towards Col de Cerise. The climb is steep but not difficult. You pass under a blockhouse to change slopes and finish with a few steep bends!

(7) The arrival at the pass offers a superb view of Monte Matto... and the valley you climbed with Lac de Cerise at the bottom!
Return to the car park (S/E) via the same route you took on the way up.

Notes

We did not see any water sources despite two being indicated on the IGN map.
There is a military barracks that can be used as shelter at Col de Cerise on the Italian side.

This route passes through a protected area, which may be subject to special regulations:

Worth a visit

Lac de Cerise: a small, pleasant lake with quite a few chamois in the surrounding area.
Lac du Mercantour: a beautiful, isolated lake at the foot of the Cimes de Cerise and Cime du Mercantour.
Col de Cerise: A beautiful view of the Italian side and Monte Matto.

It is possible to climb to the Cime du Mercantour for a superb panorama of the Argentera, but the path is poorly marked and signposted.

Always be cautious and plan ahead when you're outdoors. Visorando and the author of this route cannot be held responsible for any accidents occurring on this route.

A beautiful, challenging hike rewarded by the sight of a family of ibex at the Cerise Pass!
Numerous chamois were also spotted along the hike.

Given my current fitness level, I stopped at Lac de Cerise. This is a typical Mercantour mineral cirque, very similar to the one overlooking Lac Nègre.

The hike can really be described as difficult, even if you stop at Lac de Cerise (700 m elevation gain out of the 1,000 m to Col de Cerise), with some steep sections right from the start in the forest on a very well-marked path.

A very beautiful parish-specific to Brittany hike without any danger in the company of chamois.

Steep incline over a short distance. Given the difficulty, we did not complete this hike, as it was of little interest.

A magnificent hike, challenging but with a well-marked trail. Difficult to find the path to Mercantour Lake on the way there, but clearly visible on the way back from Col Cerise. Magnificent views with numerous chamois on the snowfields around the lake, some of which enter the blockhouse overlooking it.

A beautiful hike for experienced hikers, the final stretch to the pass is well worth the effort. The valley is magnificent, with a few chamois. Lake Mercantour is definitely worth a visit.

Hello
If you don't know the name of the lake, it's hard to say!!!...
Many of the lakes in Mercantour have one or more passes that are difficult to access, and very difficult if they are covered in snow.
I'm sorry I can't be of more help.

Hello, could you tell me: I once went on a hike and arrived at a lake in Mercantour. There was snow at higher altitudes and it was indeed a very challenging walk. Is this the same hike? Thank you for your help.
