Mercantour Peak

The secondary summit of the park, to which it gives its name (by mistake, according to legend), the Cime du Mercantour is relatively accessible and offers a pleasant, uncrowded hike.

Please note: the descent to the Vallon des Erps requires caution and is only suitable for experienced walkers.

Description of the walk

From Nice, drive up the Vésubie valley to Saint-Martin-Vésubie, where you will then need to take the M89 towards Boréon. Once you have passed the lake, turn left towards the Col de Salèse and Col de Mollière passes. The trail starts at marker 370, a few metres after the bridge. You can park along the road or, if necessary, in the Boréon car park next to the lake.

(S/E) At marker 370, take the small road on the left towards the Col de Cerise. At the first bend, a path cuts across the road. Take this path and rejoin the road a little further up. Turn right to rejoin the road until you reach some private properties and a sign marked "Sentier" (path) at the next point. The "Sentier" sign invites you to cross private land: follow it to a memorial stone.

(1) Turn sharply left towards Vacherie du Cavalet and Col de Cerise. The climb up the valley is very pleasant, in the shade of the forest.

(2) At marker 373, turn left. At marker 374, turn right and continue north towards Col de Cerise, walking through the forest. You will arrive at a small plateau where the trees gradually disappear. You will reach Lac de Cerise (which is just a small puddle in summer).

(3) Continue climbing north-northwest.

(4) Turn right towards Lac du Mercantour (be careful to spot the path, which is not very visible; leave the path that continues north-west towards Col de Cerise). Follow the cairns and climb north-north-east towards the Lac du Mercantour pass. Reach the lake, from where you can finally see the summit to the north-east, at the end of the ridge.

(5) Go around the lake on the right, crossing a scree slope (follow the numerous cairns). Roughly halfway across the lake, turn right (northeast) towards an unnamed pass between the Cime du Mercantour and the Caïre Nègre. Climb up the scree slope, following the cairns. Find a path for the last few metres and arrive at the pass.

(6) Follow a path that heads northwest before turning north-northeast. This will take you to the Cime du Mercantour (view of the Vésubie Valley below and the Argentera on the Italian side).

(7) Descend to the unnamed pass.

(6) You have two options:
- The simplest option: descend via the same route you took on the way up.
- Option for experienced walkers: as marked on the map and described below, leave the path to the south-east. The start is marked by a cairn (after that, there will be none for quite some time). Descend carefully, as the slope is steep. When you reach a scree slope, head east to reach Combe Guilié. You will come to a stream.

(8) Cross the stream and head south (the cairns reappear). Descend southwards following the cairns, passing at the foot of Caire des Erps on the left. A path eventually reappears along with the trees: you will arrive at the edge of a small plateau (magnificent view of the Vallon des Erps below).

(9) Continue down the path to find the shade of the forest below. Follow a few switchbacks and you will find some water sources. You will arrive at the Vacherie des Erps (marker 378).

(10) Continue south then south-west towards Boréon. At marker 377, turn right and keep heading towards Boréon to find the stele.

(1) Back at marker 371, retrace your steps to return to the starting point (S/E).

I did this route as a round trip... because the loop seems a bit limited to me. Fewer cairns and no markings. Otherwise, the view of the lake is magnificent. Enjoy your hike, everyone.

This is the second time in two years, and it's a really enjoyable outing. You have to set off very early to catch the chamois at Lake Mercantour, with the sun rising over the lake, offering superb photo opportunities.
Follow the trail through the rocks to the pass, then the final climb is easy and offers a beautiful view.
The descent via Les Erps is challenging for those who are not used to it, so be prepared... The valley is magnificent, but it is a very long walk back to the car.

This is a beautiful hike with lovely views of Lake Mercantour, Argentéra and many other peaks in the Mercantour. The climb is beautiful, well marked and challenging. There are no major difficulties in reaching the summit. We returned via the Vallon des Erps valley as suggested by the route. The slope at the start is steep and tricky, so you need to be careful and sure-footed. Once you've descended into the Vallon des Erps valley, you'll find yourself in a magnificent environment with lots of animals (chamois, ibex). The descent is easy, simply follow the path to reach Boréon.

A truly beautiful hike, discovering Lake Mercantour after the climb is absolutely stunning. The 360° view from the summit is magnificent.

The descent via Combe Guillé is not difficult. Stay on the grassy slope and to the right of the slope until you reach a path that leads to the scree slope. Follow the cairns between the boulders as you descend the valley on the left bank of the small stream. In my opinion, this is the most difficult part.

Superb hike. One of the most beautiful! My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It took us an hour less than expected. A challenging route with good climbs and beautiful descents. The scenery is magnificent. You start in the forest and gradually lose the greenery. The arrival at Lake Mercantour is sublime. The lake is nestled in a cirque. The summit of Mercantour offers a fabulous view. The descent into the Vallon des Erps is magnificent. We loved Lac des Adus, Le Geilas, Mont St Colomb, Trecolpas, Arpette, Lac Autier, etc., but this hike has it all. And it's just as challenging as we were hoping for! Be warned, you need to be in fairly good physical condition to enjoy it. As a bonus, we were alone on the trail! A must-do!

A very beautiful and enjoyable hike, especially the first part. We did the circular hike and it's true that the descent to Vallon des Erps is very steep and I would even say dangerous. You have to hold on tight to the rock and watch where you put your feet so you don't slip (if we had brought a rope, we would have tied ourselves to it for extra safety).
Otherwise, it was a perfect hike and one to recommend.

A very beautiful hike. The marker connecting Lac du Mercantour and La Cerise has indeed disappeared, which can be misleading. However, the cairns are clearly visible, as are those above Lake Mercantour leading to the unnamed pass. Superb visibility at the summit. Set off early to avoid the flies and, above all, the heat. As for the descent of the Vallon des Erps, it is not recommended for hikers who are not experienced in high mountain terrain: very steep descent.
