Description of the walk

Access: Praz de Lys: Les Molliettes car park (1505m) (opposite the ski lifts).

(S/E) From the start, follow the well-signposted route. Head up towards Lac de Roy along a wide track.

(1) Instead of heading straight for the lake, at the first fork, turn right following the signs for Chalet de Véran (1623m).

(2) From the chalet, continue straight on to the Col de Sommant at 1,726m.

(3) At Col de Sommant, turn back and head back via Chalet de Véran.

(2) From the chalet, turn right and head to Lac de Roy. Stunning views of the Mont Blanc massif.

(4) At Lac de Roy, head right towards Pointe du Haut Fleury: there is a choice of several small grassy paths, either close to or slightly further from the lake. Visually, the destination is clearly visible. Continue to the sign for “Sous Frête de Penaille”.

(5) At the 1862m signpost, head up to the right towards Pointe du Haut Fleury along a wide track.

(6) At Pointe du Haut Fleury (1981m), there is a magnificent panorama over the Cluses valley with views stretching as far as Lake Geneva and the Mont Blanc massif. Two panoramic information boards provide details of all the peaks surrounding us. Return along the same route to the signpost “Sous Frête de Penaille”.

(5) At the signpost, continue straight ahead and head towards the Pic de Marcelly. We leave the wide path to take a ridge trail which can be exposed in places and is equipped with cables. Many hikers go as far as the Pic de Marcelly; we chose to go to the Pointe de Couennasse (easier than the nearby Pointe de Marcelly) where the view is also very beautiful.

(7) From Pointe de Couennasse, return via the same path.

(5) From the sign for “Sous Frete de Penaille”, to head back down, we follow the same path for a few metres, then turn right onto the path that goes round the lake.

(8) At the end of the lake, turn left to return to the crossroads we passed on the way there.

(4) From the lake, turn right onto the same path, then right again at the next junction.

(1) Turn right and head back to the car park (S/E).

A lovely walk with a beautiful view.
The only downside was that it was very busy (two buses on the day of the hike), but we still enjoyed it

A lovely route amidst free-roaming cows; there’s quite a bit of elevation gain, as expected. You can look out over the lake and take a break up on the grassy slope. We walked up to the top of the chairlift at 1,900 metres and came back down on it, after which the descent along the narrow path is a bit trickier. There are stunning views of Mont Blanc from various spots.

A superb site.
However, the short route up to the Col de Sommant isn’t particularly interesting (a very wide, stony ski run).

A superb spot.
However, the short route to the Col de Sommant is of no interest (a very wide, stony ski run).
I followed the route to the Pointe de Haut Fleury and then opted for the Pointe de Marcelly (a magnificent ridge walk, with a short exposed section before the peak, very well secured with cables. Return via the quieter side of the peak).
I headed towards the Pointe de Couennasse and chose not to retrace the route taken on the way up, but to continue along the ridges towards the Chalet de Roy, then on to Lac de Roy and back to the car park (a few sections requiring sure-footedness, with only a few landmarks on the rocks; the path is very clearly visible)
I completed the whole route at a steady pace, including breaks for photos, snacks and a meal, and it took me 5 hours.
This hike is definitely worth it
I highly recommend it!!!!
