The Pointe d’Uble and the Vallée des Munes from the Praz de Lys

A beautiful circular route including the ascent of Pointe d’Uble, one of the peaks surrounding the Praz de Lys plateau. The return journey takes you through the charming Munes valley and its waterfall. With a bit of luck, you may spot some mouflons along the way.

Description of the walk

Access by public transport
Cluses SNCF station, then bus Y93 towards Taninges - Praz de Lys; alight at Taninges Praz de Lys Tourist Office.
The Y93 bus route only operates during the summer and winter seasons.

Access by car
Drive to the centre of Praz de Lys and park in the car park opposite the tourist office. Spaces are also available nearby in the large car park opposite the “Les Mouflons 1500” residence.

(S/E) Follow Route de Chevaly towards Taninges for a few hundred metres. Pass the chalets and holiday homes until you reach the “Le Chalune” chalet, situated on the left just before the junction with a track.

(1) Take the track on the left. This descends towards a small clearing before climbing back up into the forest, then turns sharply downhill towards the valley. You’ll come out onto a track.

(2) Continue to the left to cross the Torrent Boutigny. Reach the Crotte chalet.

(3) Head up to the right and, immediately afterwards, leave the track opposite (private) to turn onto the path on the right towards Rosset and Pointe d’Uble. Pass the Rosset chalets.

(4) Continue straight ahead towards the chalets and Pointe d’Uble. Reach the Uble mountain pasture situated on a promontory.

(5) Turn left and continue to a fork where two possible routes present themselves. Landmark: a clearly visible rock situated between the two paths.

(6) Continue along the path straight ahead. This continues to climb up the slope before veering left and following the gently sloping path.

(7) Look out for the path on the left which you will follow on the descent; continue straight ahead, then veer to the right to climb more steeply again. Reach the summit of the Pointe d’Uble.

(8) At the summit, the view of the Roc d’Enfer is impressive, and from there, looking left, you have a 360° panorama of the Pointe de Chalune, the Pointe de Chavasse, the Col de la Ramaz, the Pointe de Marcelly and the Praz de Lys plateau, the Aravis range with the Pointe Percée, the Mont Blanc massif, the Tour Sallière, the Dents du Midi and Mont Chéry. Descend via the same route as the ascent until you reach the fork.

(7) Turn right onto the path, which you spotted on the way up, descending a slope that is initially quite steep, then veering left onto a slight incline before rejoining the path taken on the way up.

(6) Turn right and follow the path back down the way you came to Le Rosset.

(4) Turn right towards the Munes waterfall and chalets, and the Col de la Ramaz. Go round the bottom of the Vers le Folliet chalet (private). Cross the Torrent Boutigny.

(9) Turn right, heading due north, onto the track to reach the Cascade des Munes.

(10) Continue along the path to the Munes chalets, taking time to admire the views of the Pointe de Chalune.

(11) Turn left towards Col de la Ramaz. Pass the Sur les Prèses chalet.

(12) Turn left towards a clearly visible signpost for the cross-country ski trails. Follow the cross-country ski trail on the right up to a small reservoir, which you should go round to the right. Once you reach the Col de la Ramaz, cross the D308 with care.

(13) Follow the track to the right to the Chalet de Véran.

(14) Turn left and head down the ski run until you reach the D308. Follow it to the right, taking care. Pass in front of the chalet ‘Chez Jean de la Pipe’ and continue to the junction.

(15) Continue along Route de Chevaly on the left to reach the tourist office (S/E).

Thank you, kaolac1, for your comment.
I'm delighted that you had the opportunity to discover Praz de Lys outside of the winter season.
In the hikes I write about, I try to choose starting and finishing points that are accessible by public transport or avoid the need for a car.
In this particular case, the Pointe d'Uble and Vallée des Munes loop from Praz de Lys necessarily involves starting with a descent, which may indeed come as a surprise. To start with the ascent, you will need to park your car at La Crotte, at point 3 of the hike (car park indicated on the map).
We hope this route has inspired you to continue exploring this magnificent region this summer.

It was very pleasant to discover Praz de Lys outside the winter season, it gave me a different perspective on this mountain resort.

The hike is quite strange because you start by going downhill, then there's a long flat stretch, and then it gets really tough until you reach the peak. You have to hang on though, because it's very hot at the moment and you're exposed for three quarters of the hike.
Nevertheless, the view is superb!
