From Roquebilière, follow the D171 towards Belvédère then Pont du Countet (terminus) for 15 km.
(S/E) You will enter the Mercantour National Park (PNM). At the first crossroads, head towards Refuge de Nice, following the Gordolasque river on your left.
(1) At the second crossroads, turn right towards the wooden bridge over the Gordolasque and follow signs for Refuge de Nice.
(2) At the third intersection, take the path to the left and leave Lac Autier on your right. Follow the signs for Refuge de Nice and climb towards the Mur des Italiens (remains of the war).
From here, descend towards Gordolasque and cross it (stone bridge) at the fourth intersection.
(3) Leave the path on your left (return route) and resume the very steep climb towards Lac de la Fous, which you will see ahead of you.
You will arrive at a flat area with a wetland. Stay on the path (very fragile and sensitive area).
(4) At the fifth intersection, continue to the right onthe GR®52and you will arrive at Lac de La Fous.
(5) Walk along the lake on your left and then climb up towards the Refuge de Nice.
(6) Continue on theGR®52towards Baisse du Basto (1 hour 45 minutes one way) and after a steep 45-minute climb, you will see the beautiful Lac du Nirè.
The return journey follows the same route until you cross the Gordolasque before the Mur des Italiens.
(3) Take the path on the right and follow the cairns (be careful, this downhill path has a very tricky and technical section; do not attempt it without extensive experience of high mountain walking, especially after 4 to 5 hours of difficult walking). Otherwise, take the path you took on the way up on the left and return to the car park (S/E).
