Lac de Brassa via Les Combettes

Once you leave the forest, Mont Blanc is omnipresent. Then there is a lovely circular walk through the Combettes mountain pasture to discover Lac de Brassa at the foot of the Grand Mont. This is a circular walk with no technical difficulty.

Description of the walk

From Arêches le Planay, head for Le Chornais and park near the holiday centre.

(S/E) From the car park, climb the tarmac road for 150 m to its end, then continue along a wide track that descends slightly to reach the Quéfins mountain pasture.

(1) Follow the signpost and climb up to the left into the forest via a winding path. This emerges in the mountain pasture, below a wooden barn. Continue climbing up the mountain pasture, then continue climbing after passing two farm buildings until you reach an intersection (signpost for Les Combettes 1,792 m) with theGRP® Tour du Beaufortain.

(2) Leave the path to the right towards the Refuge des Arolles and continue left towards Lac Tournant until you reach the next intersection (signpost for Entre le Fer 1943 m).

(3) Leave theGRP® here and take the path on the right that leads to Lac de Brassa.

(4) After the lake, continue climbing towards a pass. The path will lead you to the arrival station of the Combettes chairlift.

(5) Descend via the ski slope to pass under the Grande Combe ski lift. The Refuge des Arolles is clearly visible and can be reached via the stony slope, but it is better to take the path on the left side of the valley. Shortly before arriving at the refuge, rejoin the GRP®.

(6) From the refuge (signpost), descend along the path towards Le Chornais, which crosses a track several times. Pay close attention to the markings (yellow) or you may end up in Le Planay. The path rejoins the forest for a long descent and finally leads to the Quéfins mountain pasture.

(1) Take the same route back up to Chornais (S/E).

The presence of tree trunks on the return leg spoils the fun a little. They are sometimes inextricable and very difficult to get past.
Opt for a round trip, with Mont Blanc opposite on the return journey.

A beautiful circular route following the route suggested by Visorando.
It's quite a steep climb throughout the route, but the forest section is quite pleasant in hot weather.
There was a storm on the way back and some slippery sections in the forest, but no problem with suitable footwear and walking poles.
Beautiful scenery and lovely chalets on the uphill section to the lake.
The return to the refuge is monotonous and uninteresting, so it's best to take the path parallel to the stony track.

A very beautiful circular route; the lake is not very large but is well worth the effort after a nice climb.
We enjoyed the route, the passages through the mountain pastures and the short break at the refuge.
We climbed in the sunshine... but descended in the rain, with very few other hikers out that day.

A beautiful circular route completed on a lovely June morning. Beautiful chalets in the Combettes mountain pasture. From Lake Brassa and especially on the Grande Combe slopes, there were numerous snowfields, but we got through without any difficulty. Numerous directional signs make it impossible to get lost. There are picnic areas (logs) at the Arolles refuge and tables at the bottom of the chairlift.
I highly recommend this walk.

A very beautiful hike! Forest, mountain pastures, and what a view! The GPS helped me at certain points to make sure I was on the right route, as I didn't see some of the signs mentioned in the guidebook (the second sign at point 1 and point 6), and the presence of snowfields from Lake Brassa onwards obviously hid the path.
Thank you for this route, which was completely deserted on this day in June!

We didn't meet anyone.
This route is busier on days when the "Piapolay" chairlift is open (markers 2 to 6).
