Lakes Uzious and Anglas from Gourette

A lovely loop from Gourette that takes you past numerous lakes.
Best undertaken in good weather.
Part of the route is unmarked. The GPX track may prove very useful.
Follow the directions in this description. You must ascend via the water channel.
Classified as difficult due to a tricky (but safe) section on the old penstock
Reported on 08/09/2024: very recently, a handrail (chain) has been installed along the entire length of the penstock

Description of the walk

Get to Gourette resort via the D918 from Col d'Aubisque or Les Eaux-Bonnes. At the hairpin bend in the centre of the resort, head south-east and pass under a building, continuing for 300 m and leaving the lower car park behind you.

NB: This small car park may be full: if so, park in the large car park on the right as you go up.
You can join theGR®®10by following a challenging route above the car park, which passes under the chairlift and crosses a wooden footbridge.

The hike starts at the end of the Gourette resort, at the Châlet "Les Jonquilles", above the large car park.

(S/E) Follow the red and white markings ofthe GR®®10towards Lac d'Anglas, heading south-east. Take the first footbridge over the Cardet stream and then follow the right bank of the Valentin torrent for 400 m.

(1) Take a footbridge over the torrent, cross to the left bank and continue climbing steeply up the path. Leave the forest and arrive at a summer pasture. Continue climbing and cross a track.

(2) Continue straight ahead, climbing south on a well-marked path. You will see the Cabane de Coste de Goua, which is in perfect condition and occupied, on the other side of the stream. Do not go down there.

(3) Shortly afterwards, leave theGR®®10and turn left, staying on flat ground, onto a grassy track that heads towards Le Valentin (altitude 1711). Stay on the left bank of the stream. After 300 m, leave this track which heads towards the stream and climb steeply up the path on the right which rises generally southwards. Cross a few streams (at an altitude of 1821 m). You will arrive at the ruined huts of Congues (altitude 1885 m) which were used during the iron mining days.

(4) The path becomes steep and winds through scree. It is clearly marked. You will come to a waterfall. Leave it on your left and continue to the right, following the path. Things are getting serious.
Be careful. Leave the scree behind and arrive at a recess on the right in the wall where there is a tunnel with old pumping equipment.

(5) You now have to climb up following the old penstock.
This route is only suitable in good weather. The path has deteriorated (August 2017).
NOTE: see practical information (1)
In 2024, a handrail (chain) was installed along the entire length of the penstock.
It is essential to follow the steps carved into the rock at first, then follow the old penstock. This passage is safe in good weather. Take your time and climb this steep section calmly, following the old penstock.

Note: after taking the few steps carved into the rock, it is perfectly possible to climb this section by keeping to the wall on your right and the pipe on your left.

You will arrive at a summer pasture and reach Lac d'Uzious (altitude 2,117 metres).

(6) Cross the spillway and follow the well-marked path to the left of the lake, heading south along Lac d'Uzious and towards Col d'Uzious. You will come within sight of Lac du Lavedan (altitude 2179).

(7) Turn right, looking for cairns, yellow, blue and orange markings and a trailer marking, which will take you south-west. Go around Lac du Lavedan on the right and continue looking for these cairns. A large cairn made of ferruginous stones indicates the start of the path.

If the weather changes and visibility is poor, turn back.

This route heads due west towards the Hourquette d'Arré, which you can see. Follow the cairns and yellow markings. Join theGR®®10, below the Hourquette d'Arre, below an old hut in poor condition.

(8) Fork in the path. At an altitude of 2,440 m, turn right and follow the red and white markings. The path quickly descends towards Lac d'Anglas. Continue to follow the red and white markings. Pass the altitude of 2,282 m, then the old iron mines and reach Lac d'Anglas (altitude 2,068 m).

(9) Cross the spillway, turn right and head north-east. The path winds downhill with the Cabane de Coste de Goua, already seen on the way up, in sight.

(3) Follow the same path you took on the way up in the opposite direction. After passing the Cabane de Coste de Goua (on the other side of the stream).

(2) Take the path on the right that descends (GR®®10, red and white markings).

(1) Arrive at the footbridge and return to the cars (S/E).

Notes

After Lac d'Uzious, following the stream, a spring emerges below the path.
We are in high mountains, where the weather can change very quickly. You will therefore need clothing to protect you from the rain and cold. 2 litres of water, a snack for lunch, a digital camera, a 1:25,000 map, the .gpx track and the PDF of the hike.

NOTE: at (5), if in doubt or if the path is very rough, go back down to (3) and climb up to Lac d'Anglas via theGR®®10.

Worth a visit

Gourette is a family ski resort that is difficult to access due to narrow roads.

If you enjoy small mountain roads, you should go via Arrens-Marsous, the Col du Soulor and the Col d'Aubisque and descend towards Gourette. Please note that the road between the Col du Soulor and the Col d'Aubisque is narrow and exposed.

We did the route in the opposite direction to the one suggested... We wanted to limit ourselves to Lake Anglas at first, but as we were feeling fit, we carried on. Not recommended, as the descent along the pipeline is really no fun! Otherwise, superb views and magnificent autumn colours.

Very beautiful hike, the passage along the old pipeline, a bit of climbing secured by chains, very enjoyable. Quite a physical hike.

Superb hike.
Contrary to the difficulty level indicated, it was quite doable, or perhaps I underestimated myself.
I recommend it

In the morning, you can walk in the shade to the penstock, which is nice when it's hot in summer. The landscape is beautiful all along the way. The path is steep and, before the water pipe, it is quite steep and rocky. The water pipe is more impressive than difficult, but you need to take it slowly and stay focused. Then you are rewarded with the beautiful lakes of Uzious and Lavedan. After that, it gets complicated for the pass. I couldn't find the large rusty cairn at the start of the trail, so I followed a few small, inconspicuous and isolated cairns. It seemed to take a long time because I didn't know if I was on the right path, but I finally found the GR10, phew! The descent to Lake Anglas, which you can see from above, is long but the views are magnificent. There weren't too many people. The hike is very beautiful but is best reserved for experienced walkers. It's long and should only be done in good weather.

A beautiful hike in fine weather. The chain makes the climb along the pipeline much easier. Magnificent scenery and a herd of horses to welcome us at Lake Lavedan

I would like to add an important detail.
Very recently, a handrail (chain) has been installed along the entire length of the penstock, which makes it much easier to climb, especially when it is wet, as was the case for us.
Thank you again for the reliability of your guides!

I deliberately waited until mid-September to do this route, part of which is on the GR 10. As a result, we encountered very few people and were able to enjoy this magnificent loop to the full. We climbed up to the Hourquette d'Arre to get a view of Artouste. There is no description of the iron mines at Lake Anglas. Thank you to the author for this wonderful day

A lovely hike with lots of points of interest (mountain history, lakes with views of the Hautes Pyrénées and the Pic du Midi de Bigorre, horses, sheep, cows, swimming in Lake Lavedan, etc.)
Your head will be in the clouds at the start (which means you won't see the elevation gain...), but it clears up afterwards.
Be careful to start on the left and don't miss the fork to make the loop. The climb to Hourquette d'Arré is very steep (especially after lunch) and not always well signposted (follow the yellow markings)
The climb on the old pipeline delighted the teenagers in our group...

Magnificent hike
We climbed up to the Col d'Uzious. From there, we headed west, skirting around the Lac du Lavedan to the south. We lost our way a little (we didn't really look for the signposts) and climbed up to the Hourquette d'Arre. It wasn't a big detour, but the end was a little steep.
There were more people around Lac d'Anglas... From the Hourquette d'Arre, the atmosphere was very mineral, in contrast to the climb...
This hike should definitely be classified as difficult... the descent is quite challenging for the feet...
Cows and horses at Lac d'Anglas...
In good weather (which was the case), bring plenty of water (2 to 3 litres)

Well-marked trail to the second lake, then much more challenging to reach the GR 10 trail, which is difficult hiking

The trail is popular towards Lake Anglas, but the climb via the penstock to the Uzious and Lavedan lakes and the return to the GR10 are much less so. The description or GPS track for the turn-off to Lake Uzious (and the climb before Valentin) is very useful as there are no signs on site. The IGN map can also help as it is accurate. In fact, the signs indicate Lake Uzious via Lake Anglas first, then via the Anglas shoulder - 1.2 km after the lake on the GR10.
The climb up the penstock is fairly easy, with small steps carved into the rock. This adds a little spice to the hike while making the climb easier, as you gain several dozen metres in altitude without too much effort. The passage between Lake Lavedan and the GR10 requires good weather, as the markings are not obvious.
The remains of the mines are interesting to see.

Hike completed with my family and my three children (aged 6, 8 and 10), who are very familiar with the mountains. There are two places where you need to be careful not to take a wrong turn (or have a GPS tracker like we did): point 3 (there are no signs indicating that you need to turn left) and between points 6 and 7, where you need to look carefully for the markings. The children particularly enjoyed the section along the old water channel. Most of the route is quiet, but there are lots of people at Anglas Lake.
Thank you for this beautiful hike

This hike is one of the classics in the Ossau Valley. The trail is difficult at first with some fairly rough sections. After the Saxe woods, it gets easier. The fork after the Goua hut is the key point if you want to climb up to Uzious via the penstock. Unfortunately, there are no signs and it is very unclear at the fork, with a wide track used by vehicles that seems to lead more to the summer pastures than to Lake Uzious.
Yesterday, 26 May, there was still significant snow, including a large patch covering a third of the length of the penstock and a lot around Lake Anglas and on the section of the GR10 between the lake and Uzious.
There were quite a few people on the trails and around Lake Anglas. We are outside the national park and there are quite a few people with dogs.
A beautiful walk, but I would still recommend good shoes because of the scree and some slightly technical sections.
