Pic Sanctus and discovery of the old Anglas mines

A beautiful circular route above Gourette with the ascent of Pic Sanctus (2,482 m), which offers a stunning panorama, particularly of Pic de Ger and the Vignemale and Gabizos massifs. The return route via Lac d'Anglas is dotted with the remains of the old zinc mine.

Departure from Gourette station, accessible via the D918 from the Col d'Aubisque or from Les Eaux-Bonnes. Park in the large Cardet car park.

(S/E) Join theGR®10at the end of the car park, passing by a fitness trail and then through a wood.

(1) Leave the footbridge over the Valentin and continue climbing on theGR®10. Long climb along the Valentin, in the shade in the morning.

(2) At the Coste de Goua hut, keep to the far left. There is a beautiful steep climb in the Louesque valley, which you will cross several times to reach the lake.

(3) Leave thefirst Lake Louesque on your left and continue climbing to thesecond lake.

(4) This is followed by a steep climb over scree to reach the ridge.

(5) Continue straight ahead to reach Pic Sanctus (2,482 m).

(6) Enjoy the beautiful panorama of the Pyrenees, Pic de Ger, Vignemale and Gabizos massifs, and Pic du Midi d'Ossau.
Descend, following the ridge at first, before turning left towards the Col d'Uzious.

(7) Then turn right to descend towards Lac du Lavedan and then Lac d'Uzious.

(8) At the end of the lake, and before the start of the penstock (which also descends steeply to Gourette but avoids the old mines, which would be a shame), turn left for a final, slightly steep climb and join theGR® 10.

(9) Take it on the right and follow it all the way down to Gourette via Lac d'Anglas.

(10) Cross the old Anglas iron mines and their remains, which dot the return route.

(11) Pass Lac d'Anglas. Continue the descent to the initial fork.

(2) Take the opposite route to the one you took on the way up, descending opposite to the Cardet car park (S/E).

Hike completed in early September. An incredible view at the peak! You need to be in good physical shape to handle the elevation gain, but it's worth it! We didn't get to enjoy the lakes much on the way back because thick fog rolled in... We assume they're beautiful anyway. In short, we recommend it and will definitely be back to try for better weather

A magnificent circular route with beautiful lakes to discover. You need to take your time on some of the slopes, which are a bit tricky to descend.

A very beautiful hike. Best done in early July, when the grasslands are covered with beautiful flowers. Rhododendrons in bloom embellish the mountains, lakes and magnificent landscapes...
A very interesting circular loop.

You are absolutely right, pushing on to the Louesque Pass is pointless unless you go even further to the Pic de Louesque before retracing your steps to finish the ascent of the Sanctus. Route changed...

A magnificent hike with three stunning lakes. The climbs are tough, but the reward is worth it. The only downside is that we didn't understand the point of going to the Col de Louesque before climbing up to the Sanctus. The descent to the Col d'Uzious isn't always easy, but the sublime views make up for it. Best done in summer, as it was quite chilly up there on Tuesday. Thank you for this wonderful suggestion!
